Though every review I've read compares new Panasonic plasmas with the 5090. Debate therefore continues to rage, since KRPs were technically the previous reference (taking black level as the singularly most important aspect of image quality).

I'll be interested to read how the KRP and ZT65 compare following the TPS meet.

EDIT: This was a response to post #2 on this page (should have quoted really). My reply made less sense out of direct context.

Any chance of some good pictures too, Strapped?

The KRP is a better set - its has full 10 point greyscale management - not that its needed, supposedly better blacks - not sure on the measurements.

An owner on AV Forums says its a cleaner image as well - less dither - he had a 5090 before his 600A. I hate the idea of a sepearte media box though - dont know why just do - silly me

To me, the KRP vs. ZT65 (or even 5090/6090 vs. VT65/ZT65) debate is only relevant if you're a Pioneer owner. While the Pioneers remain absolutely fantastic TVs, there's little sense in buying a second hand Pioneer that will very soon run out of warranty.

I can only think of three reasons for Kuro owners to replace their TVs right now:

1) They want a bigger screen

2) They really want 3D (smart features are available on a £50 BDP, after all)

3) Their TV breaks

I dont see why people fret over warranties - the fear of TVs breaking I find quite extraordinary - the people who have had problems dont seem to get great results from having the warranty any way by the looks of it.

Maybe its because I have never owned a Panasonic TV...... :)

It's more a question of value. A five year old TV is unlikely to last as long as a brand new TV, and may develop niggles sooner (consider reports of red tinted blacks on ninth gen Kuros). A second hand Kuro may give the owner many years of trouble free viewing, but if a problem develops, things can get expensive.

This isn't me knocking Pioneer at all; what Pioneer did with plasma technology was remarkable at the time and price. It's telling that it's taken Panasonic this long to match 5090/6090 black levels. Even Panasonic's professional monitors couldn't do this.

FWIW, if I owned a 5090/6090 or KRP, I'd keep it for now.

As Requested some Batman Pics.

Please bear in mind my room has a lot of ambient light - its middle of the day and its bright sunshine shinning into the living room - I have curtains closed but you can still see some reflection of the curtains in some of the pics

Also I dont always get a clean pause on the blu ray sometimes its a bit blurred because the shot is moving

Also to point out |I have the sharpness completely off on the Plasma - still sharp image because of greascale calibration

I could add pics, but I've only got a low resolution digital camera on my phone, so I doubt the resulting images would be worth posting. This is why I've never added system pics.

I can say that adjusting contrast and brightness (using AVS test patterns to set the TV up) has resulted in very different images from the pics you linked to, which as EllisDJ points out, seem to crush blacks quite a bit (I also used Mark's greyscale and CMS settings as a way of roughly tuning out the TV's out of the box green tint.) Obviously this is all far from ideal, but these settings will do until I get a full calibration. The picture already looks cleaner. punchier and more natural than the GT50, as you'd of course hope.

Yeah its the LX55 - I have messed about with it a lot - the best settign in a calibrated screen I think is PDP.

I was using it on custom with detail +1 which I would suggest on a non calibrated screen.

I am actually thinking of chaning it for a Marantz UD7007. I want a reference quality player and I think the Pioneer is very good but my system warrants a bit more. Veyr hard finding info on the Maranzt I am hoping to get a home demo to test up against the Pioneer

Yep, I felt the same when I was using my 71 on the 5090, I didn't think I was getting the best from the screen on Blu-ray, but I have to say on my GT50 my Pioneer looks awesome! It is brighter and Blu-ray does look better, I wouldn't change my Blu-ray player now.

Predominantly point 1 in my case. Time will tell whether WHF and HDTVtest agree with AVForum's conclusion that the ZT65 is an improvement on the Kuro for picture quality (likewise those who attend the upcoming demo's), but if it only matches the Kuro but with a 20% increase in screen size then I'm happy.

If I'd had the money to buy a 65" Kuro at the time then it might be a different equation now, but I didn't, so I couldn't; though ironically a 65" screen wouldn't fit in my current living room set-up anyway, so guess it all works out in the end.

Non calibratred Kuro image looks flat - just like all tv's really - getting that greyscale in give the image real pop and that creates depth.

They didnt make a 65"" - i think 60" is the perfect size - I wish I had bought the 60" as well

That would be why I would but the ZT

Sounds like you had your Pioneer set up very wrong to me Gel - the 71 has various video options - from memory Pioneer or Professional was best.

However the LX55 I think has better pic than the 71, a more refined sound, the 71 has a more bassy sound but not as clean.

It is set up fine to be honest, I have seen it on about seven TVs now, and I used two other Blu-ray players on the Pioneer. It was not bad on amything, it was really good, just the GT50 is better.
