The problem appears to be turbulence as the air flows over the holes drilled in the back panel (apperently the fans are silent once the rear cover is remived) and the 'fix' is basically additional foam strips placed around the fan beneath the casing (am guessing this reduces the airflow, and therefore the associated turbulence?).
People are having the fix done by authorised Panasonic service centres under their warrantee, so if that's what this guy has had done then he should be covered.
