After yesterday's Finn-fest, inspired by this Crowded House thread, i've been musing on a suitable Friday follow-up.

Superb songwriting, excellent singalong potential.... it had to be Squeeze.

Difford and Tilbrook, we salute you

I was about to say "oo I met one of them at a wedding the other week (along with Austin out of the X Factor)", but it was the bassist out of Ace. Paul Carrack-related confusion.

'Tempted' is in my top.....(makes a number up)....twenty songs of all time. That line "I said to my reflection let's get out of this play-ay-aaaace" makes me wobbly.

Quote about the song from Glenn Tillbrook:

"I was very pleased with the chorus. We had spent a lot of time touring in 1979, which was when "Pulling Mussels" was written. We spent a lot of time touring with The Tubes. And I realized sometime afterwards [that] what I'd done was to absorb The Tubes' very complex, theatrical arrangement of "White Punks on Dope" into "Pulling Mussels." I think that the chord sequence at the end of the chorus is my assimilation of that song. You know, it bears similarities. The great thing about music is that it filters through that way, and it's nothing to do with copying. You absorb what someone does and it enriches [you].

Lyrically, it's just a lot of snapshots of English seaside holidays. You know - kids with runny noses and sand in their ears and all that stuff. I'm sure it happens everywhere, but for me it was England. "

Hi JD Lets make that five a side then, I met Ace just when they were starting out, used to play at a pub on the A316 between Twickers and Sunbury on Thames. Lived in St Margarets then.

So it's just jellied eels and cockles and stuff? I always thought it was rude...

Only saw them the once, at Cardiff Arms Park in 1991 supporting Bryan Adams, they got booed (I couldn't believe it, did the crowd have no taste...obviously not!). Favourite track: Labelled With Love.

Actually, I have one of those - "Loving You Tonight" from the Four Weddings and a Funeral soundtrack. I'm such an amateur...
