Clare Newsome:Someone just mentioned Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and Hero as ones to add to the list, plus the original version of The Ring

Hero? I fell asleep through that. And that doesn't happen often. Thought it was underwhelming at best.

For martial arts i much prefer Tony Jaas Ong Bak and the superb Tom Yum Goong! Have a remote handy so you can rewind fairly regularly. No wires or CGI either!

Could not agree more about Once Were Warriors a stunning film. Also have a look at Whale Rider for more Maori culture. Also in my DVD collection are the Infernal Affairs trilogy, Brotherhood(korean), Brother (russian), The Orphanage & Pan's Labyrinth, El Mariachi, Y tu mama tambien (mexican).

As most suggestions so far as fairly recent films, here are some older classics:

Tokyo Story

Alphaville

Orpheus

Bicycle Thieves

Man With A Movie Camera, a 1929 Russian Film that used a lot of seemingly modern techniques, such as split screens, jump cuts, fast/slow motion, tracking shots etc.

NB: none of the above will give your surround sound system a workout!

In no great order:-

The Three Colours Trilogy (I know it's three films, but they're all tied in)
Hidden
Diva
The Seventh Seal
Downfall

Das Boot - the TV series however, brilliantly done, never saw the film.

Yeah, but did you find the all good?

From memory, I thought TC Blue was best. The summary that brings all three films together was rather clever in the third film too I thought.

Subway (1985) with Christopher Lambert and Isabelle Adjani, directed by Luc Besson. The first time I saw it was at a film club. The projectonist could not fit the picture onto the screen and so we watched it without the subtitles, a real workout for my O grade French. I like Euro thrillers so La Nikita (1991) with Anne Parillaud, directed by Luc Besson.

I've just watched "Eastern Promises" and I quite wasn't prepared for it. I hadn't read up on the movie and knew nowt about the actors (we did recognise Vincent Cassel and the other leads) or who the director was. A very good movie, that would easily be in my top 10 or 20. Very enjoyable overall (some of the scenes made my g/f irk a bit though...

Bicycle Thieves (Vittorio De Sica 1948)

The Blue Kite (Tian Zhuangzhuang 1993)

Raise the Red Lantern (Zhang Yimou 1991)

Russian Ark (Aleksandr Sokurov 2002)

The Seventh Seal (Ingmar Bergman 1957)

I'm afraid I don't watch many movies these days...

That wouldn't have anything to do with the ultra-violence and explicit sex scenes would it?

Gaspar Noe, who made Irreversible, seems to specialise in extremely violent films. The one he did before Irreversible, I Stand Alone, is if anything even more disturbing, featuring as it does a lead character who is both repellent and brutal.

I didn't find the violence in Baise Moi as disturbing, as there's so much of it and it's so over the top that eventually it becomes almost funny!
