However my top five would be

Ran

Cinema Paradiso (directors cut)

Diva

The Page Turner

Pauline at the Beach

Did anyone catch the rather charming french film "Orchestra Seats" on BBC4 last night? I came across it by accident, but it's well worth a look if its repeated ( and most stuff on BBC4 is).

I assume most people are interpreting it as the British and American academies do, which is films made in languages other than English. Or indeed American.

My favourite (and no one appears to have mentioned) is La Vita e bella (Roberto Benigni's "Life is Beautiful").

Didn't this win a few Oscars as well??

It did (including a posthumous one for Benigni). I've been meaning to watch this for ages (I'm now going to log in to Love Film).

Err......Isn't Benigni still alive?

Big Chris:

Err......Isn't Benigni still alive? Yep. Doesn't anyone remember his Oscar-acceptance speech?

"Famously, in the midst of being so giddy with delight, he climbed on the back of the seat for his procession to the stage and applauded the audience after winning the Best Foreign Film Oscar. Also, after winning his Best Actor Oscar, he said in his speech, "There must be some terrible mistake, I used up all my English!" The next year's ceremony, when he read the nominees for the Academy Award for Best Actress, host Billy Crystal playfully appeared behind him with a large net to restrain Benigni if he got excessive with his antics again. "

Someone just mentioned Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and Hero as ones to add to the list, plus the original version of The Ring
