Bad news for people like me, who like a good solid, mechanical keyboard that is high quality but, with zero frippery.

From another forum:

“Diatec, the Japanese company behind the Filco brand, has gone bust.

Might switch back to my Majestouch II for a bit, in memoriam.”

Google translation of the link:

That's a terrible shame another quality brand gone.
Gamer's it seems are switching to cheap nameless keyboards from China.

There are some Old school KB manufacturers still operating today, like Keytronics, and another with Duck in the title.
Contemporaries Corsair, Razer, Logitech and Steelseries make decent mechanical keyboards but plenty of frippery!

Wouldn't worry about it too much unless you don't have a mechanical keyboard, as good quality ones last for decades (Mines over 30yrs old and still going strong).

As to frippery, its mostly RGB (Which you do not need to turn on) or extra controls for media (Which you don't have to use), which increases cost minimally.

You're right Bill, you can switch off the LED and those brands that come with the frippery, make excellent mechanical keyboards. Razer on their top tier models offer dedicated lasers for each keycap, which have excellent response.

Even better are the models from Steelseries, their keycaps are magnetic driven, these provide better force and actuation can be adjusted from software.

I'm someone who likes the bling, don't mind it. It also serves a practical purpose, you can use your keyboard at night without disturbing any one, ah but mechanical keyboards click like hell! 😉

I object strongly to paying for features I don't want and, will never use. I've had my Filco for nearly 8 years and, see no reason why I won't be using it for many more years. Not sure I'll be around long enough, to use it for over 30 years though...

With Razer you are paying a high price for products, from a manufacturer that does not have a reputation for durability. As for noise, my Filco has Cherry MX browns, they're a little quieter than some. Using your pc and therefore looking at the monitor, in the dark, whilst not necessarily harmful, is likely to cause eye strain which may lead to headaches. I never do it, I'm already prone to headaches as it is.
