After reading the 32" tv supertest I'm seriously thinking about getting the Sony KDL32V5500 TV (for my parents but thats irrelevant) along with the Humax 9300T freeview box.

Just two things worry me.

1) Is the sound on these sets really poor? It's for my parents. They are used to their existing 29" CRT TV, so will it be much worse than that? A soundbar isnt going to be feasible.

but more importantly . . . .

2) I do hear negative vibes about the sony backlight on the bravia's. However I don't think anyone has complained about the 32" model. Its only on the 40" and upwards. Is that right?

i dont know about the v5500 but my mam has a 32v4000 from last year , and there is no backlight problems with that , however my friend has a 46v4000 and there is slight backlight bleed on that , its not too bad , it wouldnt bother me .. i dont think the smaller screens suffer with it too much , ive not read many complaints from 32 inch owners , anyway , as mathewpiano and other sony people on here say , talk to the seller about your concerns and make sure they will replace , refund if your not happy , then you have nothing to worry about ...

In terms of the sound its pretty good on the 32V5500. What you do need to accept is that you can't defy the laws of physics. You can't fit much of a speaker driver in a flat panel TV so the better tube sets do still beat them for sound. However, the sound on the Bravias is one of their strengths. I use a 2 and a half year old 32" Bravia at home and I'm quite happy with the sound on it. The V5500 has plenty of sound adjustment control as well so it can be set up according to personal taste.
