A week or two ago my parents bought a new sony 32" TV (KDL32v5500) & a Humax PVR9300T set top box. I went over and wired it all up for them (also connected to an existing dvd/vhs player). Showed them how to use (for 2 hours) it and left. Since then I've had several phone calls and been back over 3 or 4 times, due to various problems they are having. There's nothing wrong with the TV or the set top box. They just cant get their heads around it working differently to their last set. But the biggest problem is having two remotes (actually three if we include the dvd/vhs player (which they are now to scared to use)) and which button does what.

Examples of the problems they have are

"the sound isn't working" - Answer you are using the wrong remote

"The remote doesn't have a button with 'record' or 'play' written on it" - Answer. Correct it doesn't. Its the red dot for record and the white arrow for play.

"How do i get to watch a program I've recorded" Answer. Well if you look at the instructions I typed up for you press menu, then press record, then press recorded programmes, then press the right arrow, etc etc (I admit its a little convoluted)

I obviously don't mind telling them what to do, but I can tell they are getting more and more frustrated with it. As their old CRT TV only had 5 channels. Text was one button, and watching a tape or a dvd, meant pressing 0.

I have thought about recommending they get a harmony one remote which hopefully will remove 90% of their "issues"

But they arent cheap and if they still have the same problems its money down the drain.

Let me give you an example of the call I just received. "We are pressing the list button (to get a list of channels) but nothing is happening"

I connected the humax box up to HDMI1 and the dvd to AV1. There is an input select button on the sony tv which I left as selected on HDMI1 so when they turn the tv on it displays the humax, and then the humax TV remote is all they need (well apart from volume). I guessed that the input select had somehow gone back to TV and was picking up the sony's internal tuner so I had to get my mum to press the input select button and then scroll down to HDMI1 and select it. The problem on the sony is that the input select menu stays on screen for about 5 seconds and if you dont do anything it goes off. As my mum and dad are quite slow finding what button to press it took about 20 minutes for them eventually find and select HDMI1.

So if i bought a harmony one, could I program it so that when they select "I want to watch TV", it will open input select, scroll to the right option & select it? This would also be needed for the dvd, which they daren't even attempt to watch yet as changing inputs is too complicated for them.

Would it also replicate the record and playback functions of the Humax, which I can tell they find too difficult?

Any advice/comments harmony one users?

You could get it to do all of those things for you. I suggest you do all the programming though!

Thanks for the prompt response. Yes I would of course program it for them.

I can get one on Amazon for £99. I'm not familiar with Amazons return policy (I've never returned anything I bought from them). If I get it and they just cant get along with it, can I send it back to Amazon for a full refund?

My Harmony One controls TV, amp, Sky+HD box, Blu-ray player, CD player. All inputs go through the amp. All anyone needs to do is to touch the correct icon: "Watch TV", "Watch DVD" etc. and everything comes on to make that happen. The blu-ray player is also controlled by the Harmony. I could have set it up to control Sky too, but I prefer to use the Sky remote to change channels. "Simples!" My wife and kids love it - no, correction, they don't love it, it's so good they don't even notice it! Everything just works so easily. I have a pile of redundant remotes on the shelf.

Amazon will only accept returns if the item is faulty or unopened. You could always get a 2nd hand one off ebay and sell it on if need be. You don't really need the instructions, it's all self explanatory when you install the software. Just an example of what they can do - I can select 'watch tv with amp' and the tv turns on and to the right input and volume is muted, cable box turns on, amp turns on and to the right input. Now the harmony volume button is assigned to the amp and channel buttons to the cable box etc. You can even download pictures for all the tv channels and have them assigned to the channels on your tv/cable box.

Its all sounding very good. Downloading pictures sounds very good. I need it as idiot proof and simple as possible

I've seen marketing pics of the harmony one and it always 3 options on the front screen 1) watch TV 2) watch a dvd 3) listen to music. Can I change these to make them more relevant ro my parents? For example, you will laugh but my dad is a massive channel four teletext user (I didnt know this until I was beseiged with calls saying he couldnt get teletext on anymore), so could I have TELETEXT as an option?

If they saw listen to music they be expecting it to turn the radio on in the kitchen

Oh one thing just struck me. Can it get confused if you say turn the TV off without using the remote? I ask because they turn the tv off at night (off, not standby), but when they turn it back on again, it doesnt startup in standby mode, the tv actually comes on. So if it was programmed to re-create pressing the on/off switch on the remote, then it would in fact turn the TV off (hope that made sense)

tractorboy:Dave - I didn't know you had the same parents as me...

LOL. Yes its amazing that something as simple as selecting a program to record which takes me 15 seconds has them both fumbling about for their glasses, their remotes and their hand written notes on which button to press. Bless em.

Maybe when they asked me if they should get a new telly I should have told them to stick with what they had. Ah well progress waits for no man.......

You don't have to allow the Harmony to power off/on devices it's optional. I power my TV / AV on/off manually. I have a "Watch Teletext" option that goes to text . Basically the One will do all you need and your folks will be able to use it no probs.

Yes, it can get confused. If the TV has been switched off separately & then you power off with your Logitech remote, the TV will switch itself on. The problem will happen when you switch on with your remote, & one of the components (TV or Sky box) gets switched off. There's a 'help' button on the remote which will ask you simple questions (Is the TV switched on? etc..). You just have to answer yes or no, & it will sort itself out.

With a bit of use, I'm sure they will be able to operate it easily.

Keena & Bibboss (bruce lee fan by any chance?) - Thank for the responses (and everyone else too). Its my dad s birthday this month so I'm tracking some harmony ones on ebay. I think its just what they need. hey I may even buy one for myself!

barnsleydave:I bought one off ebay this morning for £66. Fingers crossed.

Well done , any probs just shout but sure it'l be okay.

Harmony 525 user here, but the programming principle is the same

To avoid device powering on and off confusion (which seems to be one of the main complaints with universal controls), make sure that you always set the power on and off functions for each device/activity to use the 'Power on' or 'Power Off' commands, and NEVER the 'power toggle' command. That way it avoids any confusion if something is turned on or off using a different remote, or the initial power on command doesn't reach one of the devices for some reason.

Good Luck!

I initially found that cumbersome. However, under the sliding panel on the remote is a "playlist" button which brings up a list of recorded programs without going through those menus. You can then use "OPT+" to organise by date/name.

Thanks again guys. The remote has been posted so I expect it will arrive tomorrow. I want to try and make it as idiot proof as possible. Thats why the idea of a button (or screen) marked "Watch TV", "Watch DVD", "Teletext", "Record a programme", "Watch a recorded programme" appealed to me greatly. I have already downloaded some tv icons and when it arrives I'll enjoy programming & testing it.

(Having said all that I've not had a phone call for over 4 days which may mean they have finally got to grips with the new tv and set top box (or it means they have given up and daren't ask me any more questions))

Well good news and bad news. The bad news is that I couldnt get the remote to work consistently and correctly with my parents sony tv, humax box and samsung vhs/dvd machine. The only problem was selecting inputs. The humax is connected vis hdmi to hdmi1, the dvd player to AV1 via scart. When I selected "Watch Tv" it correctly selected HDMI1 and switched on all the relevant kit. On selecting the "Watch dvd" activity again it correctly selected the right input and switched all the right equipment on. It was when I went back to watch TV from watching a dvd that the unit constantly selected AV3 as its input, and not HDMI1. Despite hours of re-programming it wasnt possible to get it to work. It was possible to correct it via the help button, but again my parents wouldnt have been able to do that EVERY time (and why should they?).

Good news is my parents do appear to have finally got the hang of the new tv, pvr and dvd player and so can get by without the remote.

AND...I decided to see if i could make use of it. It set my stuff up with no problems at at all. My wife loves it as well. And unlike my other remotes this one lights up at night so i can see what buttons I'm pressing.

Not what i originally had in mind but now I have one, I love it.

Just for the record i had the same problem with a Toshiba TV. I used the Harmony software to troubleshoot and managed to fix it. Now the remote works out (counts) how many inputs up or down it needs to go, works fine now.

You got a bargain btw - have been "watching" subsequent auctions (and that one for that matter) and you got the best deal over the past couple of weeks. One went for just over £100 the other day - if I could afford £100 second-hand I think I'd just pay the extra for something brand new myself... but I can't afford so waiting for the next bargain to turn up...

Yes I thought the price was reasonable. But I did say if someone goes to £68 I would have let it go. You can get them brand new on Amazon for £99.
