I have had my Brio-R for 2 1/2 years and I have always used the stock power cord. Well I bought the cheapest power cord that custom hifi cables sell and I tell you what I was suprised by the improvement because I wasn't expecting any at all. I almost backed out of the sale after ordering the cable. But I am glad I bought it now that is for sure. The only upgrade I got on the cable was a ferrite core for an extra £3.

The improvement was a blacker background - I can hear more nuances in the music. It was a really nice upgrade and I'm glad I did it.

For the sake of the sanity of those of us with a technical background, try the following.

1. Download a sound measuring app to your phone. (There are a number available, and some are free. Decibel 10th seems to get good reviews)

2. With nothing playing, turn the volume of your amp way up to a known point (all the way if the noise isn't too bad).

3. Measure the noise from the speaker right up against the grill. Make a note of the reading.

4. Turn the amp off, swap the mains cable and repeat 1 to 3 above.

No difference?

Well infiniteloop I guess you've heard it all. All for, All against. Has there been an out come, can you hear a difference?

In my experience:

Putting a Chord Superscreen on my TV plugged into my Tacima mains block from Maplin did give me a clearer picture. By standing right next to the screen there was less noise in the picture than before. Hence though there is a mains conditioner in there and not a regular 6 way.

On my Hi-Fi I have to stick with the mains chord on my DAC as it's attached and not a plug in one. but the CD player, control amp and power amp all have Chord Superscreens on but again I have them pluged into a True Colour Industries Constrictor mains block.

The mains cable are better shielded so will reduce in my book te amount of EMI and RFI that will get in the system and the fact they are passing a cleaner mains supply to the system help even more.

The TCI mains block has no conditioning at all it's the Constrictor mains lead attached to it that filters the mains supply to the 6 sockets and for £120 it made a noticable difference. I know I will get flack for spending £120 but I don't care, I know what my ears can/can't hear. I would prefer an Isotek EVO 3 Sirius mains conditioner but can't currently affor £450 I know what one will do on my system as I tried a friends one and I have nver seen a CRT look so good.

If you only plan to try one expensive mains cable put it on your CD player as that is the first part of your system and the cleaner that is less crap will go through the rest of you system. If you put it on your amp, the last part of you set up you will be trying to clean all the crap that has been passing through all the other components in you set up. That's my main bit of advice.

I hope you get a worth wile result.

Why, I wonder, do all the people that have absolute faith in their ears, refuse to find out how our hearing actually works? Enough people, including myself, have posted links. Just ignoring something won't make it less true.

All I am saying is there was definitely a difference for the better. Not massive but I think a worthwhile difference for the money. The sound was just more liquid/smooth and more coherent. It was quite suprising.

The cable was £40. I'm happy. I don't care about anyone else or care for people jumping dowm my throat. I am just stating my opinions and what I am hearing. There are many cables with money back guarantee offers. I don't know why people don't take them up if they are curious.

Good bye you puerile lot.

You're happy with your purchase and you don't care what anyone else thinks. Spend less time on forums and you will be even happier.

Just because you think you hear a difference doesn’t mean there is a difference, only a proper blind test can prove this.

If you think the more expensive cables make you happier with your system, then this is also a valid reason to buy them. (Music is emotive)

Above all before purchasing expensive cables, consider what else you could buy/upgrade for the same price that would give you a real performance boost.

Finally consider this; only a few HI Fi Nuts believe they can hear a difference between cables whereas the rest of the music industry doesn’t, (Including the ones that produce the media you are listening to) and neither do most other punters in the world, therefore think very carefully before purchasing these expensive cables. (Also don’t assume advertising hype is fact)

Something to think about

This is indeed good advice. People like him will certainly be a lot happier not sharing their thoughts on this forum because all they're gonna get is the same bunch of rabid dogs getting on their case. |(

On the positive side, I learnt a new word... puerile

I tried this this morning ,

amp turned off , 35 dB ± 1 dB at the tweeter and bass drivers

amp powered on reading -35dB , 35dB ± 1 dB , ear to the speaker , silent , normal listening levels with music 55dB's peaking at 65 dB's

amp powered on reading -25dB , 35dB ± 1 dB , ear to speaker , silent , loud listening levels with music 65 dB's peaking at 75 dB's

amp powered on reading -20dB , 35dB ± 1 dB , ear to speaker silent , this is stupid drunk levels for metal thrashing mad peaking at anouying them next door

amp powered on reading +10db , 35dB ± 1 dB , ear to speaker silent , never tried it , figure deafness at this SPL

Live source feeding the input AEX, Mac connected , powered up but not streaming ,dB10 iphone app , ± 1 dB because I was there , it reads me aswell

You could certainly try a new cable, but as it would seem you have no mains noise worth talking about, I struggle to see what possible good it would do.

It might be illustrative if the 'blacker blacks' posters on this thread tried a similar test. The real proof of the pudding would be to perform your test, then replace the mains cable with a magic cable and repeat. This would however be a pointless test in your case as there is no mains noise.

" Even an entry-level audio-grade power cords ($95) can make a sigbificant difference in the sound of a system. Replacing all the stock black

AC cords with entry-level cords takes you much of the state of the art in AC power. More expensive cords are generally beter-sounding in some manufacturers' line, but even the basic cords can render a significant improvement over stock cords. "
