picture format adjustment

When playing a blue ray disc through 60g ps3, Onkyo 705, via HDMI connections into my 32" Hitachi lcd, everything works superbly, with the set acknowledging the 1080i picture and the sound amazing. However, I would like to be able to resize the picture from the wide screen format with the heavy banding top and bottom. The tv will not allow me to change from the standard format as the signal seems to block these options (I have about 4 picture size options usually). Is there something I can adjust on the ps3 or 705?

Press the

button, then choose the screen mode

which may let you adjust the zoom on the output to fill your screen. Not sure - not a great expert on PS3 I'm afraid.

What you're getting is the movie in its original format, as it should be seen, which is a wider aspect ratio than that of your TV, hence the black bars.
