One thing must be clear - we dont want comebacks this time. No loop holes.

The biggest complaint with the last comparison was regarding the speaker stands. This time round mount the ATCs on proper hifi stands and for the AVIs just prop them up with a few books on whatever chairs or stools you have at home.

hi.. the link won't work here.. what's the song?

Damit, Spotify. Artist: Ane Brun / Album: Songs Tour 2013 (Live) / Track 14: These Days

Excellent choice of music! I have seen Ane Brun perform live twice and she is absolutely amazing especially when she is with Tonbruket .

Is this track on this album as compressed as the rest of her commercially released recordings?

http://dr.loudness-war.info/album/list?artist=ane+brun&album=

You may also wish to include a recording with a dark green DR rating.

Indeed. It's been 5 years since I last saw her live. Unacceptable, really, I'll see to it I won't miss the next opportunity. Her latest studio album is also masterfully produced.

I don't know , songs live 2013 is only available as a download .

This is why I have become sceptical about the value of this DR database, the Cd "It all starts with one" sounds like it has a very wide dynamic range, the impact takes your breath away and is very close to how it sounds live .

Who are the panel? Maybe would be good to get some completely independent listeners along.

how blind are you going to do this?

also, how loud?

you know what set ups we're having.. do you have any ideas on how to connect the 3 so we can switch instantly from one to the other and to another?

Switchover doesn't have to be "instant" as such, but it would be good to have someone else do it!

I've lost track of what the various combinations are, but would presume that a set of speaker cable swaps and/or just a USB/RCA swap would do.

Sometimes all you need are a few cables and a bit of lateral thinking. ;)

A few days ago when I setup an A/B comparison between my NJC DAC and the DAC in the Yamaha DSP E-800 receiver I used two separate digital outputs from my PC which I switched between while music was playing. The NJC DAC was connected via a USB cable and the Yamaha receiver was connected via an S/PDIF cable. So all I needed to do to perform an instantaneous A/B switch between DACs is click a button on the screen in the 'Playback devices' window to swap between USB and S/PDIF outputs while simultaneously pressing a button on the Yamaha remote control to switch between inputs.

It looks complicated when written down but in practice it's very simple. All I need to do is press two buttons at the same time and I get a virtually instantaneous A/B switch.* You could probably setup something similar to this yourself using what equipment you already have to hand. Just think carefully about what you have available and approach the problem logically.

For example most AV receivers have multiple USB, S/PDIF and HDMI digital inputs on them as well as multiple RCA analogue outputs. You can use these to do the switching in a similar way to the method I mentioned above. All you need is the right cables connected in the right way and then just switch the digital output on the computer while simultaneously switching between inputs on the AV receiver. Simples. :)

The volume levels can also be pre-matched before hand by adjusting the volume individually for each digital output in the 'Playback devices' window (which can be found by right clicking on the little speaker icon in the bottom right of the screen). Once they're all set so that you have the same volume coming from each pair of speakers you're ready to do the A/B switching comparison.

* Ok there's about 1/3 of a second silence between swaps but it's fast enough.

seems like a simple solution for our comparision... we can use my macbook: optical out to avi, usb to devialet, usb to hegel..

So are the systems going to be kept as pairings of amp+speaker, so we have:

infinteloop: Devialet 200 + Focal Electra 1008Be (£3,500?? + £3,000)

lpv: AVI DM10 (£1,500)

andrewjvt: Hegel H360 + ATC SCM11 (£3,400 + £1,200)

All driven from a MacBook Pro running iTunes with lossless CD-Rip outputting via optical/USB to integrated DACs?

And all systems that have cables will have "decent" speaker cable, and all systems will have "decent" stands of their own and have the same tweeter height? Or will the AVIs be on Ikea plant pots + crochet books?

I include estimates of standard pricing, although one suspects that (other than AVI) these are subject to up to 20% discount if you negotiate well!

Agreed. If you're not sitting in exactly the same place for both products, the end result might not be comparable. Even a few inches can make a difference (she said).

Just make sure that everyone brings as many RCA, USB and S/PDIF cables as possible to maximise you're options. You don't want to get there on the day and find you've limited you're switching opitions due missing one crucial cable.

Also if anyone has an AV receiver bring that along just in case. They can make handy switch boxes.

I do one or two dems a week and most don't have their kit with them and yet still they can tell DM10s better almost immediately, so instead of massive planning, I'd take all your various systems and leave them in the car. If any are close you can always compare, but I don't think you'll need to go to so much trouble.

Is this a wind-up, Ashley?

The proof of the pudding is in the eating - if someone tells you that your cake stinks, but you shouldn't bother comparing - then alarm bells ring.

Although I'm in grave danger of becoming an AVIian, may I respectfully suggest that you try to behave!

It was the first part of your post that I was particularly objecting to...

The second part does not add to the debate, as we've all heard it before - believers will believe, haters are going to hate! I'm sure these emails come from platinum-eared cognescenti, but you must accept that people want to judge for themselves....

I think youve quoted the price for the devialet 120.

Last time i checked dev200 was between 5 and 6000

Hi Andrew,

I've been intrigued by this post and been following from a dodgy interconnect in Greece (hols). It's your own comparison with ATC SCM11s/Hegel that really grabbed my attention. I also own a pair of SCM11s currently driven by a Nord Hypex from Colin. I believe (rightly or wrongly) that for the money, I'm probably at the limits of great sound with a passive system in my listening room (maybe at any price?).

So the question is whether the AVI active option will take me further? From your experience, it would appear possible. Would love to hear them myself and would love to compare, like you did with the ATCs. However, not sure whether there's any room for another body + amp at your next comparison venue. Do you plan to keep the ATCs after any future purchase of the AVIs and if so, is there any way I could grab a listen at some point in the future? Also not sure how I would be feeding a Linn Akurate into an active speaker; by RCA line level or by RCA pre-out (the Linn has a digital volume pre out)?

Many thanks for any (polite) suggestions.

It most certainly is not a wind up!

That email came from Ivan as described and it pretty much mirrors what everyone who hears them says.

One of the biggest driver manufacturers in the world visited us, designed us special drivers and then the owners bought a pair. The email from Ivan is their eventual response. At first they couldn't understand why they sounded like headphones. Then they realised.

Your right i dont even need to put up my amp again as i could clearly hear the clarity/neutrality and all positives of dm 10 straight up.

This is mostly for everyone else.

Id be happy for just dev 200 v dm10.
