Mains cables ?

You need to try one for youself from the likes of Clearer Audio, where you get a good trial period....or from your local dealer.

No, but you can convince yourself that they do. £80 will buy you a couple of bottles of decent wine. Have the wine and then you current cable will sound wonderful.

I have found they make a difference, but some of the so called Hifi mains cables are just spruced up standard cables with a fancy sheath covering them, and better quality plugs. These are not going to make much difference, yet sometimes cost £100. This is one reason why some people think mains cables are voodoo, because they have never tried a specialist, purpose built cable.

Wireworld and Nordost are 2 manufacturers that spring to mind. They both make specialist Hifi mains cables, and these can make a significant improvement to your system, but they can cost a lot.

I personally rate proper Hifi mains cable above speaker cables and interconnects. I gain greater benefits from Mains cables.

I'll be trying out an Audience AU24 later this week, at a knock down price, normally £1200 new!

Have previously tried a Cardas Golden Ref and there were definite improvements...

Incidentally have tried a £5 bottle of wine and a £95 bottle... couldn't tell the difference!

I know what I'd rather spend my money on and I can assure you, only if I can hear a marked difference.

Also, if your going to spend money on mains cables, change the fuse in the U.K plug too for an Audio grade fuse like Hifi Tuning. And then change the Ac fuse(if accessable) in the equipment.

Make sure you do the test blind, (So that you have no idea which cable is in use) and you will find that there is no difference between cables, so you can stick with what you have.

If you want to hear a difference, make sure you know which cable is in use and your brain will tell you that they sound different, (Even though they don’t) it’s just a normal human failing where other senses override your ears. (Hence the blind test is best as only your ears are in use)

Try one on 60 day trial from clearer audio. If it sounds better and justifies the price to you buy it. If you hear little or no difference or don't think it warrants the cost return it for a full refund. Simple!

I'm willing to bet that none of those who suggest that changing your mains cable will make a difference can put forward any logical explanation as to why that might be the case. I'd also suggest (ducks) that none of them has any scientific qualification.

Might give the 60 day trial ago with the cable, personally I can't see how it would change the out put of the amps signal but for a risk free trail, it's worth the time for the possibility even a slim one for improved sound quality. .

BTW IMHO the only things a mains cable needs are 1, to have a 13-amp plug on one end; 2, the right kind of plug on the other end; and 3, to be long enough to make it from the wall socket or surge protector to the hifi. The key thing to do is to keep your mains cables away from your audio cables so you don't get any mains "hum" being picked up.

What do you do at night

I've seen battery power packs marketed for audiophile use, but then I guess being a battery it would make no difference whether you charged them off solar panels or the grid.

I'm looking into a hydroelectric system myself, but I don't know what to do about the disturbance caused by the constrant flushing noises.

I would spend the money on a monster mains cleaning adapter instead and you will have all your sockets cleaned from any mains interference. Rather than just getting one main cable

The only way to know for sure is to try yourself.

Last year I dabbled with mains leads and blocks from Mains Cables R Us, and also a SBooster for my Squeezebox Touch from Mark Grant Cables. I went into it with an open mind, trialled them for the 30 day period and decided that I could hear no difference so I returned them for a full refund.

Both these companies are superb to deal with and offer a no quibble returns policy provided you return their products in pristine condition.

I would never knock anyone for saying they find an improvement, but personally I could not.
