LCD viewing angle

I've been looking into purchasing a flatscreen TV for some time, but have noticed that almost all LCDs have very poor horizontal viewing angles. Sony seem particular poor in this regard - you only have to get ~40 degrees off axis, and the picture gets noticeably dimmer, and the colour starts to wash out. In my lounge, at least one chair would be at this sort of angle, so the picture would be unacceptable.

Why is this 'Achilles Heel' never mentioned in WHF ? I notice that the Sony 40W4000 won the shoot-out in the latest edition of WHF, yet the poor viewing angle wasn't even mentioned !

Only Panasonic LCDs seem to have this problem licked.

AFAIK its a problem (among many others) that LCD will always have due to the nature of how the screen works much like old Rear-Projection sets and is here to stay. Another problem with LCD is Black reproduction, now I know this is better on newer sets but is only achieved by lowering the Back-Light level so IMHO this is not really fixing the problem as lowering the backlight also affects the screen detail.

GO PLASMA!!!!!!![8-|]

Panasonic plasmas are excellent for viewing off centre. Plasmas are much better than LCDs in this respect. There is no diminution of colour or brightness at acute angles.
