Speaker cables & bi-wiring?

Hi, after weeks of demos and testing i have finally opted for a set of quad 22l's to go with my cyrus 8vs2 and cd8x! i have now got them wired up with an old set of gale xl189 speaker cables and i am finding the bass a bit too muddy for my liking! would a new set of bi-wired speaker cables help cure this? and if so which ones (budget of bout £10 per metre), i have also yet to connect the speaker spikes, so could this also help to rectify the situation? and would you reccomend granite plinths for the speakers to stand on?

Ok, didn't want to start an argument, just looking for some opinions on whether a change of speaker cable would cure this condition of slightly muddy bass from the quads, and would fitting the speaker spikes help? Doesn't have to be bi-wire speaker cable, standard cable would be acceptable if it would help.

Firstly changing cables is not going to help that much and the cables that may help would cost more than your speakers so it would make no sense. Try a set of Gotham from EBAY as it cost very little but sound the same as most.

Spikes will make a different (depending on your floor) but in most case they will improve bass preformance. As for Biwire? I can't comment on that as none of my speakers ever benefit from the method however changing a terminals jumpers could help.

(Oh Oh here we go) I think you'll easily improve on the Gale stuff you're using, and in my opinion your system deserves more than (the respectable) Gotham. I'd stay away from QED with your set up, maybe think Chord or Kimber.

I can't see the science, logic or hear the difference with bi-wiring, although adding jumpers to your speakers will achieve the most bi-wire has to offer for much less (as Thaiman says).

Spikes good. I use plinths, can I hear a difference - no. Do they look good - yes.

Thanks Thaiman, will try the spikes next, i have just had a new wood floor layed, so do you think i would be better off with some granite chopping boards to sit the speakers on, or some little neoprene spike discs?

If your using proper granite plinths though, you don't really need them.

agree with thaiman,
i cant see a true improvement everytime change my interconnect until i get Siltech SQ-28 which cost more than my speaker.

You can email him and order whatever lenght you wish! and not very often that I disagree with JD, I think value for money is superb simply because I couldn't hear much different between them and LFD cables(££/metre) I have at the time.

I agree - change one thing at a time. If you change 2 things at once you'll never know what made the difference. (Unless you are an expert at factorial experimental design - but then the point is to enjoy the music not run experiments isn't it?)

QED Silver Anniversary Biwire. It's a slightly leaner cable, so should help tame your muddy bottom end(!)

Thanks guys, have now put the spikes on the speakers and placed them on tesco's finest granite plinths!! (they do look good if nothing else!) and it seems to have helped with the bass a bit as it does not sound quite as loose as before, but to my ears could still do with being a bit more controlled!! i think i might give the qed cable a try if it helps to make the sound a bit leaner!
