I am interested in buying a 40-42 inch tv, I think these are the best options currently, does anybody have an opinion on which is better as they both roughly are available at £2000, I would also be interested in any alternative sets people would recommend, thanks.

Sorry, we haven't tested either of these models as yet. However, new TVs are flooding in from all the big brands at the moment - we test the 50in version of that Panasonic in our September issue (out next week), and have more 40-42in First Tests in our October issue (out August 23rd), with a 42in Supertest to follow in the November issue (out September!)

The Panasonic is £2,000, but the Pioneer is £400 cheaper at £1,595 with www.dixons.co.uk I've just been on the Dixons website and if put in 100JULYAW in the promotional code box at checkout you get another £100.00 off, though this will surely only last for a very short time if not, hours. I've seen and heard the Pioneer at a specialist Pioneer dealer and it's quite astounding particularly as far as colour and black levels are concerned. I've seen the PZ700 and the pioneer 428xd... the Pioneer narrowly wins on teh black levels and picture quality and by a huge margin on price.
However, I've seen rave reviews on the panasonic px700 (which I read is better than the PX70). So my guess is that the top 5 ranking is as follows (but happy to wait for the October and November issues):
1. Pioneer 428xd - around £1,560
2. Panasonic 42pz700 - around £1,740
3. Philips 42PF9831D - around £1,425
4. Panasonic 42-px700 - around £1,100
5. Samsung PS42Q97HDX - around £700.
Only the Philips is an LCD.
The big question is whether £1,000 difference between the prices are worth it and noticeable. The reviews for the 428xd are exceptional, but is it noticeably different to the Panasonic px700 which is £450 cheaper. Can anyone help me decide whether to go for the px700 (pz700 is way too expensive) or the Pioneer 428xd? DO I really have to wait for next month's issue? I am fairly confident the review for the Pioneer 508xd will be fantastic and presumably it has the same technology as the 428xd. I am really leaning towards the Pioneer, but really need some help from someone in deciding whether I should go for it or the Panasonic px700 (or the px70 for that matter).

So.........You're one of those that goes by Reviews? If someone says that X is the best thing since sliced bread you will go and buy it, only to discover like so many do unfortunatley, that either X wasn't exactly what they had in mind or that it did what others said it wold do 'on the tin'.
In my humble opinion the 42PX70 is actually a better TV than the 42PZ700 on which I thought there was quite a lot of picture noise, given the fact you said you also will be watching a lot of SD, which the 42PX70 copes with more than admirably.
The Pioneer 428XD is a great TV for around £1,500.00 but is there really a massive 'void' between it and the 42PX70 ...............well yes, but on in terms of Price though SD on the Pioneer is also very accomplished.
Can't speak for the Philips at all-Generally speaking though their TV's haven't quite been up to the Mark and SONY make far better LCD's than Philips in my view anyway. EG: KDL-40D3000
However, I do admire the Samsung PS42Q97HDX which you can get for around £685, but beware it's SD pictures are far too noisy for my liking, compared with the overall composure and performance of the 42PX70.
In my view therefore:
1) Panasonic TH42PX70
2) Pioneer 428XD

Well, i have a Samsung PS50Q97HDX and the image on Freeview is amazing. Really smooth. Terrible at channel swapping but the picture rocks.

I bought a Pioneer 427xd and a 4270xd at christmas time (only buy the 427 as the 4270 is a cut down version, one for me, one for my sis) it was a wonderful TV. But, after a few months it felt like a totally normal experience and in no way, "large" or "cinematic". For that you need a 50inch plus.
So I'd think again if I were you. My room is about 14 foot square and we sit about 8 feet away from the screen. No problem AT ALL. NONE. Get a 50. You won't regret it. My choice would be either the Pioneer 507XD or the Panasonic TH-50PZ700 or for price mainly and it's a lovely screen Samsung PS-50Q97HDX. They are all 1366x768 or something and it's more than enough definition. Trust me. I've got one!

if you are looking to spend around £2000 check out the 42" fujitsu, considered by many to be better than the pioneer 428xd ?
Tallyho, when i looked on the dixons site i could only find the pioneer 4280 which is a cheaper model than the 428

Could anyone tell me if the Panasonic TH-42PZ700 has a digital audio output to enable it to be connected to an amp/receiver for a home cinema set-up, please?
I've looked at the specs. and they seemed a little vague, insofar as it mentioned a 'digital optical output' but not specifically a digital audio output (either optical or coaxial). Many thanks in advance.
