New RCA plugs on my LP12

The old RCA plugs on my LP12 are 40 years old and are a bit slack so I've bought some new plugs and was going to change them this afternoon.
When I started dismantling the old ones I was expecting there to be 2 wires to each plug but there is no wire to the centre pin! Is that correct? I know there is a separate earth wire which I assume must serve both channels. Sorry for my ignorance!

No.
You were right to expect two connections to each plug and you can be 100% certain that was once the case.

Cut back and prepare both cables, then ensure that both the centre cores and screens are connected to your new plugs.

Sorted! Thanks Gray, can't understand why the centre wire was not connected. I can only assume it broke when I pulled it apart. On the other hand that could be the cause of the clicking and noise. I initially put it down to 40 year old plugs. Anyway all good now
