I can buy for a reasonable price a Chord Clearway speakercable. Also Van Damme LC-OFC 4 mm speakercable. The Chord cost 20 GBP more. Both are 2 x 2m and terminated with plugs. Which one will be better if you like a warm and smooth sound?

What on earth does this mean. Could be interpreted in umpteen different ways. Get the cheaper one and spend the difference on music.

The Van damme is very full in the mid range which could be classed as a warm sound - not sure about the other one as I havent heard it.

Obviously taking into account the non differences cables cant and dont make .....

I actually like that. Should get me some Jean-Claudes from ebay some day. Shipping from UK is reasonably priced.

They've certainly got some kick in them . *yes3*

Buy the cheapest, or if you believe cables of similar size make a difference (No one anywhere in the world has yet provided any verifiable evidence that they do) then try and get them on a buy or return basis, and do a simple blind test, then if you find a difference (If you do a blind test you will find they sound identical) send back the ones you don’t like. (If you have done a blind test you will send back the more expensive ones)

Hope this helps

Bill

I have better look and the Chord Clearway cost not 20, but 10 GPB more tham the Van damme. But the sound..............

I bought my first speaker cables for almost 20 years recently, when trying out the Martin Logan ELS. My old Transparent Musicwave bi-wire set (that I'd bought with the Krell amp as part of the recommended system) were so heavy on the weedy terminals I thought they'd snap off, and as they were single wired inputs I had to use banana plugs to piggy back them together.

Anyway, I bought a 2.5 metre pair of Van Damme OFC 4mm terminated with decent bananas from 'Lucasoundvision' on eBay. About £50 posted. I cannot fault them in any way. Flexible, neat looking, excellent plugs, nicely packaged, and four reusable cable ties included. Sound absolutely fine. These are the shotgun ones with transparent insulators, not the very similar spec 'blue studio' version that is heavier and fractionally lower resistance (relevant only for very long runs). Strongly recommended!

Did you notice a sound difference? If so,what? (Placebo or not,of course).

Not on the Martin Logan Electromotion I was trying. On my thread about that audition you will see I didn't like them in the end. But once back with my original speakers I couldn't say that I could hear the cables contribution, so significant was the overall change in presentation. I'm planning to use the Van Damme with my new ATCs as that's how I auditioned the dem models at home. (And I've just bought some line level Van Damme too, but have only just plugged them in!)

I use Van Damme cables, bought pre-terminated from Amazon, and I am very happy with the quality of them. I haven't used any other cables to compare but I think that for the price, they are a bargain.

I'd prefer the clearway in my system which is similar to the old chord carnival silver screen but improved. The copper 4mm cable wouldn't be quite so balanced, and dynamic in my system, having tried a number of cables of similar design. But it really depends on the system and it's quality, to whether you will hear any benefits in my experience. It's not always systems are hugely better with a different cable, but there are stand out ones that work great, and others not so. Taste a big thing too.
