JohnDuncan:OK, some responses.

To drummerman and Ronald Archibald:

Of course I have access to the entire team, and they've already given me suggestions, but I wanted to open it out to the wider forum to see what responses came back - I thought it might make an interesting discussion, and it's brought up at least one suggestion which I hadn't thought of (or had subliminally already dismissed).

To drummerman alone:

By keeper I mean easily driven and widely compatible, thus not limiting my future options when the Uniti has to go back.

To sillyoldman:

Already done that (well, a Fubar and Grado 325), but I want some speakers.

To AE:

Hey, you offered, and I am very grateful.

To Whoever Suggested Quad Electrostatics:

titchy, tichy
adj titchier, titchiest
Brit slang very small; tiny
[from tich or titch a small person, from Little Tich, the stage name of Harry Relph (1867-1928), English actor noted for his small stature]

To whoever suggested ADM9.1s:

Interesting idea, though bit of a waste of a NaimUniti

To Thaiman:

Nice, but slightly too chunky and I suspect difficult to get hold of.

To AEJim:

The Reference 1s were totally off my radar, but might almost fit the brief. Think they might be just that little bit too imposing in the end though.

Otherwise, thus far I think we have it down to Neat Motive 3 (obvious - claimed - Naim compatibility), PMC DB1i (known and loved quantity), an outside bet in the Reference 1, though is quite a bit dearer and less titchy than the main contenders. The intriguing reentry is from the Dali Mentor Menuet, which at least three people have recommended on this thread (including a dealer), but which I'd kind of dismissed back at Bristol, despite it being thoroughly gorgeous, the titchiest here, and stating specifically on the website that they should go on a shelf or wall bracket, not a stand (which encourages me). I shall have to investigate further...

*cough* Quadral Pico and Audiosmile Kensai...

the record spot:*cough* Quadral Pico and Audiosmile Kensai...

I am sure the Audiosmile Kensai cost more than John's (maximum) budget. £2300 a pair I think.

It doesn't help that the Kensai are not listed as a purchase option on their own website shop.

Scanned through the thread and didnt see these mentioned, however i may have overlooked them but.........

Guru QM10s . Titchy-ish, 12x9x9 or there abouts in old money. I've heard them with various gear, flippin good speakers allbeit in a Showroom setting. Oh and they work with Naim, well something had too

, although as i see the Uni will be going home soon. Not sure how they stand up budget wise nowadays mind.

JohnDuncan:I never said soon...

Those Gurus have one of the highest USQs* I've seen...

*Ugly Stick Quotient

Lol, thats true but if you get time check out the new Sonus Faber Fenice, man thats really ugly.

I guess, as ever, it may get down to the usual trade off situation, sound / visuals. Can you get the complete package, well time will tell. Pity you want to go titchy titchy as the Viennas in rosewood ( name of standmount evades me at the min) sound and look the mutts, very very nice speakers indeed.

Perhaps some old fashioned LS3/5A or similar Stirling/Harbeth? - They, like everything have limitations but do what they're good at better than most. A friend kept his for many years, with Shearne amplification. - He's both a musician and hifi shop manager. He eventually changed them for spendors.

I think thats the ones jd. Got a feeling that the Rosewood was/is a special edition but i need to make a call to confirm. Vienna do not have a bad speaker in their range to be honest and ive heard pretty well all of them. But if you want screechy, filling removing / paint stripping sounding speakers, which i hope that you dont, then avoid them.

Nice spot there Chebby, re the face in the veneer.

I remember the first mag that had a Spendor SA1 review (Hifi World) also reviewed these Viennas in the same month. They preferred their performance due to a more complete all-round ability, particularly in the bass, i.e. there's more of it.

JD, want me to email you a review?

They were indeed bumped up - think they started out at £1500 a couple of years back, but the price hike is steep, that said, I think they design, build and assemble in the UK. A pity their own site doesn't hold them, but ex-dem might reap some rewards (thinking the likes of Audio Emotion, Jordan Acoustics, etc., who get that kind of product in).

Totem the One.

As the blurb says:

"The ULTIMATE LISTENING EXPERIENCE that unleashes the Soul by transmitting information, meaning and subtleties that are beyond language and immediate sensory perceptions."

Actually, it is a very good speaker despite the blurb.

A good shout the Totems and i can vouch for the synergy with Naim. The guy i bought my Totem Mani II sig's off was running a Naim system and when i auditioned the Mani's the sound the Naim/Totem combo produced was quite exquisite.

JohnDuncan:And a snip at £2,700...

Oh yea, sorry. Good job we didn't get (to) carried away!

JohnDuncan:And a snip at £2,700...An insignificant £1000 over budget. Bargain a bit. All right, a lot. As they say in Oz "you'll never know if you don't have a go."

Edit: Apologies, Mr Duncan. I thought your budget was higher than it is. Can I suggest the Mite or the Rainmaker instead? Heard the Mite with a Nait5i, and it wasn't bad, especially given the size of the room they chose to demo it in.

Sonus Faber Toy standmounts- great looking, very small, partner well with uniti, within budget- all the boxes ticked. Has to be the winner.

JohnDuncan:Quadral Pico looks interesting though, specially having a ribbon tweeter at that price.

How about the Roksan standmounts JD? Ribbon tweeters too, but around the £850-900 mark I think. Not sure of dimensions however.

Naim and Neat have good synergy so the Momentum 3i gets my vote. Isobaric in design so plenty of low end and small in design.

Sorry JD but they are just over budget at £1700 but shopping around may reap some reward.

I think you'd be pushing your luck trying to drive some Neat Momentum 3i with a Naim Uniti!
