Not quite - I will be able to resist for one reason, and one reason only - they don't have grilles, which, unless they're hidden in Mr Neat's garage somewhere and attach with hidden magnets, is a distinct no-no in a three child/two cat household. The sound, however...oh dear oh dear oh dear.

Fuller report to come...

Can they not supply them as an optional extra?

JD, because you mentioned a budget of over 1k, most suggestions centred around speakers of that value or more. - Do they have to be that expensive?

As you perhaps know, I have Mordaunt Short's, MS10iPearls and the 20iPearls in different rooms. I believe they have been developed using Naim products, if that matters and are closely related to Epos. They don't sound the same but I have used the 20i's with far more expensive products than my current Denons, the last time with Naim's XS and CD5x. Although the system didn't work at my home (substituting them with PMC GB1's didn't work any better), at a dealer dem it was captivating, something the people working there agreed with. I did post a thread to that effect.

I am sure a £1500 speaker will be better but you can get the 10ipearls for very little money of ebay, no risk there. The 20's are probably to big. Just an idea buddy.

No they don't at all, and indeed I'm finding that most speakers above a grand are just that little bit too big (excepting probably only the Spendor SA1), so will settle for a compromise. However, am going to revel a while in the Neat Petites (and may even convince myself that their compromises, mostly logistical rather than sonic, can be reconciled...)

Doesn't look like it - can't get a lego fridge magnet to stick to anything other than the tweeter baffle

Self adhesive velcro.

If removed with a little care it leaves no trace or residue on polished or varnished wood.

I used to use it on the backs of small, varnished wood picture frames for photo exhibitions. It is a pain removing the stuff from 50 or so frames but you will only need 3 or 4 small squares of it per speaker.

I think if I was paying £1250 for a speaker I'd object to lashing a bit of wire netting over the front of it stuck on with blu-tak.

However, as I say I may yet rationalise my fears for the sake of the music. Ooooo...

Can't you rationalise it by just thinking about the £1250 you have saved?

(If someone just happened to drop some £1250 speakers at my place just to clear some space in his garage, I would be too busy prostrating myself in gratitude to worry about the lack of grilles!)

JD - i know the price difference is worlds apart but how would you compare the Neats over your old Neutron V's?

I'm desperate for some small speakers as my Missions (gratefully received hand-me-downs from my father) are far too big for my room (3.5 x 3.5m) so it could mean the difference between buying some AVI's nowish, or saving a bit longer for the Neats.

I am thinking long term, after being somewhat inspired by AlmaataKZ post, http://community.whathifi.com/forums/t/392915.aspx, to have my dream system (something compact and musically wonderful). So in my case being a little patient instead of a short term fix, like the AVI's, just because that's all i can afford right now (although unfortunately i'm also thinking about jaxwired's immediate response and its result for AlmaataKZ. Having it sooner sounds much nicer than later).

Im also going to eventually replace the two Linn boxes for one unit, but questions about matching amps for the Neats (plus some alternatives to them for a demo shortlist) belong in another thread.

Many thanks.

Dunno really - the AVIs seem like a long time ago now. There's no doubt both that the Neats are the best speakers I've had in the house and that the AVIs are spectacular value for money, but whether there's 850 quid's worth of difference between the two would depend entirely on the system you put them on the end of, and how much diminishing return you want to pay for.

And there are plenty of alternatives (as you can see from this thread) between the two price points...

JohnDuncan:The Haydn Grand?

Yeah they piqued my curiosity, but have disappeared from the storage area (cf: corridor) in the last couple of days...

Did you end up having a listen to these with the Uniti JD or did they disappear into the depths of beyond never to return? Thinking about them for my kitchen with a Unitiqute. Thought they would do well with a warmer sound for the tiled floor and lack of soft furnishings, just worried about the 4 ohm load for the Unitiqute.

No. They sat temptingly in the 'on the way back to the supplier' pile in their boxes - which I passed seven times a day on the way to the Coke machine - for weeks. Should've whisked them away for a weekend (sigh)...

I would worry a little bit about the 4ohm load as well - I'm sure they'd work OK, but suspect the Qute would run out of puff sooner than you'd like...

Just curious John, what speakers did you find to be the best match for the Uniti?

(My experience is any one of these would fit the bill nicely - PMC DB1i, ProAc Response One SC or the Harbeth P3ESR. The ProAcs have been replaced by the D1s which I haven't heard yet, but my 15-year old One SCs are a superb match for the Uniti)

They're 89dB sensitivity. Would this offset it somewhat? Would be predominantly low-medium volume, the Qute is 45W into 4 ohm.

Neat Petite SX. Though they're a bit big for where they need to go in my house (positioning is awkward), so they went back. I'm leaning towards DB1s or EB1s now (though I've heard neither on a Uniti yet).
