plastic penguin:Wouldn't the metal dome tweeter of the Neats provoke the Naim's top-end slightly?

Doesn't seem to have stopped Neat & Naim being one of the most recommended combinations (by users and reviewers alike.)

I can't disagree. I only mention it because I think (from memory) John said that the new system was to be sited in the kitchen area. Usually, that area in most properties have hard flooring which may -- and I stress may -- highlight that particular frequency...

Nope, sitting room. Soft furnishings abound.

Neats it is then. I stand corrected...

JohnDuncan:Looking for a new pair of speakers which must be a) standmounts and b) titchy. They'll be on the end of a Uniti for now, but they could end up on the end of anything at all, since the Naim is an impermanent fixture. Quite happy to build things around a speaker though.

There are obvious candidates, some of which I've owned before in various guises, such as the DB1 and Neutron V, but no idea about synergy, and am keen to explore other possibilities, not least because the DB1 seems stupidly expensive now, and the AVI will presumably reject the Naim like an organ transplant just on principle. Neat Motive 3 would seem an obvious choice but am wary of a metal tweeter. The EB1 seems to punch above its weight and is beautifully made. I'll definitely investigate the Proac Tablette Reference 8 Signature, which I coveted for a long time and now feels like very good value against its peers. There's a pair of Vienna Acoustics Haydn Grands in the office as well which look gawgeous.

Any other suggestions? I have no budget in mind (though 1500 notes would be pushing it), just want a keeper.

Good morning John Duncan,

I don't quite get something. You work at WHF and you have direct access to any of the review team who are the experts and yet you are here asking these questions. Why?

I would have thought that Simon Lucas would have been your first port of call.

I was just curious, that's all.

Thank you.

Strange question coming, of all people, from you JD. After all, you're the man at the very centre of hifi, or at least not far off, give or take a few yards ...

Surely you could take your Uniti in and play in your break with any combination of speakers that happen to be there. They probably have a Uniti somewhere siting on a shelf somewhere at HQ.

That is of course unless they work you so hard that you don't get breaks or happen to work from home.

Also strange you're asking for a 'keeper'. You know that would only be the case if you kept the rest the same, probably.

Funnily enough I think that actually is the WHF unit...

Hi John,

It might be interesting to compare the Proac Tablettes with the Response 1SC, if (a) you do like the Proac sound, and (b) you can find a pair of the latter. I just bought a used pair and look forward to listen to them asap. Great speakers whenever I've heard them in the past!

I'm sure you don't really think that ...

I think he might, given that JD's stated on a number of occasions that he's been borrowing it for a few weeks.

As to why he's asking on here, well clearly he's trying to get Question of the Month to win his free HDMI cable!

Hello Drummerman,

No apologies required at all.

Thank you.

The Harbeth P3ESR has been mentioned. I've never been lucky enough to see a pair never mind hear them. (Living out in the wilds does have the odd disadvantage or two).

Hence I'm curious, Is there a L O N G waiting list? Also, how many pennies do they go for?

or a different way of looking at it completely:

Graham Slee Solo and a pair of Grado GS1000i's

Or what about the Sonus Faber Minima Vintage? Look and sound fabulous.

I waited about 3-4 weeks for mine but they were built to order for the maple finish I wanted.

I think it was just over £1450 but the finish had a premium attached to it.

Messiah:
Totem make some compact speakers.

I listened to various pairs at the last Bristol Show and they were very impressive.

Yeah, the Rainmakers were some of my favourite speakers from the show! Most of the more mainstream brands I found very disappointing but I can't say which - I also know a brand which makes some nice stand-mounts but I'd better keep that quiet too! 😀

Seriously though, if you want very small speakers those Rainmakers or maybe some AVI NuNeutrons off "the bay" would be a good bet.
