I think Rega have become more popular than they can cope with. Even before the new RP6 and RP8 models they were shipping over 1000 TTs per month and vinyl (for some bizzare reason) is getting more popular year on year.

Rega have also had two new amps, a DAC (and a forthcoming new CD player or two) to deal with.

They are not the sort of company to take on temporary staff short-tem (then fire them) or farm out production to third parties. Waiting lists only tend to alienate people.

I wish them well (and I might be wrong about their situation) but I think success is getting to them (at least with the turntable part of the business).

Maybe all is well really and we only get to hear about odd examples that slip the net.

I hope so.

I think you have hit the nail on the head here Chebby. They really do need to get their act in gear because bad news travels fast.

They cant afford for even the odd rogue to slip through the net. Its war out there in TT land at entry and the just above entry level price point.

Unless my memory is fooling me, I think there was a waiting time of several months or more, in the late 70s and early 80s for Planar 2s / 3s.......and I owned both with no QC problems whatsoever. In fact I gave the Planar 3 to my father in the late 80s, where it went faultlessly until his death a few years ago.

I then inherited it, but since I'd nothing to play on it, I traded it in with the dealer that I had originally bought it from.

As I mentioned earlier, I had perfect examples bought in 1983, 1996 and 2009. (All successfully sold on, even the sky blue 1996 P3 with G1042 that i'd owned for 11 years.)

I had one of the first batch of Planar 3s with the (then) new RB300 arm in 1983 from Rob Shingles at Chichester Hi-Fi who managed to secure a few without any waiting list!

Interestingly, the waiting list was in England.....but when I returned to NI, Lyric had plenty of stock.

I found this out by accident........I was driving a lorry at the time and making a delivery to a warehouse in Belfast. I found myself lost (good Irish expression), and stopped at a building to get directions. It might have been abandoned, except the door was open and music was playing. Inside was a treasure trove of all the kit that had long waiting lists on the mainland.

Needless to say, I was one of their original customers, as they hadn't been open very long. Michael is still there, having moved twice (another Irish turn of phrase, but you know what I mean)

It would make a refreshing change to read you Rega fanboys are actually listening to the music rather than constant tweaking. As I've always said: If it ain't broke, leave the EDITED thing alone!

Totaly agreed with you PP!

my RP3 have no wobble, it was prepared by a pro and sounds fantastic!

Even the white belt was inadvisable by my Rega dealer, he say that brings no difference in soud quality!

There are far too many tales from people (myself included) and dealers about Rega's slide into mediocrity and poor QC. Take your 10x5 off it and try it out on a Well Tempered Simplex (it WILL blow the RP6 out of the water!) if you can find anyone locally who stock it.

No one should have to go back to a manufacturer more than once in the hope of "getting a good one"

I'm not ready to throw the towel in yet!

Gonna see how Moorgate handle this on Tuesday when there Rega 'guru' is back in at work!

I just want the platter to run true and the motor spindle to be aligned properly

There are two camps here PP. The people who have had problems with their Rega kit and are genuinely frustrated with the company and the others who simply want to get the boot stuck in. (Because Rega are successful or British or they are fed up with hearing about them or whatever.)

Yes there are two camps, a little different from your version. There are those that feel the need to "mess" with a turntable. If you buy close on a £1000 TT it shouldn't need tweaking. As I mentioned on page 3, if it isn't good enough straight from the box then bin it and buy something that doesn't need all this preening.

The second camp i.e. me and other non-Rega owners are rejoicing how lucky we are: Six years with a EDITED old Pro-ject and only changed the cart a couple of months after buying it and NOT a hint of trouble. Bliss.

Perhaps Rega are over-hyped. Maybe even you have bought into the brand Rega... maybe old gossey, goosey has dropped a big'un.

The more I read about Rega the less I'm convinced.

PP, its nothing to do with tweaking - the platter wobbles in its standard form - the motor isnt aligned properly so looks like this is the root of the problem.

The RP6 is great of the box and your right it should not need tweaking - its the same analogy for cars - people like ito improve/tweak when funds allow (which wasnt the case with me)

Anyway I have got the standard Rega sub platter back on and it istill displaying the wobble

Like amps that you daren't use on a hot day and where they can't get a simple headphone socket to work?

Leema said it is meant to get warm and a very hot day (s). The headphone socket they could find NO fault. And while we're on all things British. I concur totally, buying British is the way to go if you're...erm... part of EU.

Actually practically nearly every amp I mention are British. I've dem'd the Leema (British) against Naim and Roksan, both British. And my previous amp was Arcam... British I presume Dr. Watson.

So its meant to have a platter based on a fairground ride?

I'll go back to my earlier post: If you spend £1000 on a TT you should not have the urge to upgrade (white) belts etc etc. Where's the skip?

If it's so great out of the box why all the faffing. Please don't give me the puny excuse "it's because of the forum".

I generally want to see this end well but it seems too much hassle for my patience.

Don't subscribe to this thread then PP if you are finding it tedious, it is very apparent now your dislike of the brand!

I am very frustrated with this issue that has notihng to do with tweaking, it seems a manufacturing defect, so Rega's after sales service will be thoroughly tested on Tuesday.

I do not accept that something so simple to display such tolerances and I really hope this can be put to bed on Tuesday.

BTW I love tweaking, allways have done!

Update!

Got everthing cleaned up with alcohol ie subplatter/underside of platter that comes in contact with sub asembly

I may be wrong - but it could possibly be the sub platter - The GT & Gus's subplatter display more wobble than the Rega Sub Platter, however it is quite minimal on the Rega sub - grrrrr serves me right for tweaking

Thank the lord for digital, my stress levels have greatly reduced!

Not feeling JITTERY then?

TT ownership may not be for the plug n'play types although some will happily do just that.

The good thing is that even small changes can yield substantial differences (not always for the good).

I don't find this thread tedious. What does grate a little is knowing people have spent money on a "superfluous product" then you feel the need to tweak and upgrade.

I mentioned it a few days ago about Rega being 'Jack of all trades' and you 'can't knock a coconut over every time' seems to be sadly true. And Chebby mentioned something similar earlier in the thread, along the lines of demand for their product seems to be having a knock-on effect when it comes quality'. Whether that's strictly true or not I couldn't say, but you don't have smoke without some sort of fire.
