And give everyone a Lego set of British challenger 2 main battle tank, along with the schematic to build one. Half way through, the kids decide its too hard. And each wants to build their own Lego model they already have at home. And find that their set at home is more suitable to build their kind of toy.

This is how things have progressed here so far :)

I fondly hope insider9 is not already feeling guilty for having suggested roon in the first place here.

Roon is DSP + DRC + media library management + RAAT. Only if we use it full fat as per above , will we realize the benefits . A mini dsp ddrc-22D costs usd800 just for room correction in comparison :)

Jriver to roon?
Because so far roon seems like the simple Lego they build at home due to limited set up options.
What's good about it is the lyrics and info on the artists with the links to alternative artists you may not realise had similar influence etc. I find this part very interesting.
Once I've ran this for a few weeks I'll be able to give a more in-depth value for money opinion.
I'm enjoying it atm

I'm using jriver but for a streamer I think the room integration is a must.

All all know that the main problem with most streaming units is not the hardware but the software glitches/freezes.

So far no one seems to have an answer.

So my question to room users

Does the software freeze causing music to stop playing with the need to reset ect. Any one using an iPad and the iPad goes into sleep mode and freezes the software or music stops.

Does room work equally well in android/windows?

I never have that problem but I'm streaming from a wired windows computer, maybe it's a wifi problem? I don't have any software like JR, tried it, sound was the same and it introduced other problems. Only problem is I've have had clicking noise on music, this has only started recently, twice this year, never before in previous 4 years, need to reboot system to clear it.

Hahaha, Newlash.

All's good here. We all have different needs and different priorities, not to mention equipment.

I'm presenting one of many ways of doing it. It happens that it is the best I came across for what I need it to do.

What's great with software is that there usually is an option of a free trial so you can make up your own mind.

Is it only a couple of weeks until you're back?

Sadly I will be disembarking in Saudi Arabia and will have to format my laptop and cell phone to avoid issues with their religious sensitivities there.

Sadly will loose all my downloaded music . Will have to try to procure a external hard drive in the limited time I have :)

Turns out, it will be easier to reacquire my porn collection than my music :D

Better not to risk gettting locked up. One thing to consider is if you're at a different port earlier just post the drive home.

I certainly don't wanna get locked up there of all the places :)

Give it a go
It's quite good and can integrate well with streaming services.
Love the lyric button.

I'll wait a few days/weeks then email you for some questions regards roon.

When I first started using it I was fooled into hearing a far better sound than what I was used to hearing.

So I opened jriver and started doing comparison to satisfy it was all in my mind.

But since doing that I've got double copies of all the lps in room now.

One thing is certain I've enjoyed putting on the headphones again even though the sound is the same.

So far if I had a separate streamer, I'd like roon to be the app I'd use.

Have you tried Focus feature yet? Top tip, it works differently depending if you're viewing Artists, Tracks, Composers, Compositions or as below Albums...

Only briefly
Can you explain its main uses

It lets you filter through your library. It's a very powerful feature.

Say you fancy having a 60's night. Or just want to listen to R'n'B but nothing before 1995. Better yet, if you fancy listening to only Canadian Jazz artists :) You can really do a lot. My library isn't particularly big but it's a great feature.

Or you want to listen to all Live albums released by Geffen records. Or perhaps play at random anything you have in DSD, but only from movie soundtracks.

It really does a lot and it's such fun to use.

Ok I havent browsed all the posts but can software really improve the source you have already archived? $100 sounds a bit pricey, but wait, they want that every year phew!

In short no
If you already set up as you are it wouldn't be wise.

If you have a dedicated streamer that has crap software and is room ready then it may be ok but the cost is very high for what it does

Jriver has many more options/settings

However if you like reading lyrics and getting info on artists etc you will like it very much.

There will be no difference in sound quality what so ever.

And remember that jriver is also a ripping service also.

Having said all that I'm enjoying roon demo

It's superfluous bloat...

I totally understand where you're coming from.
Many other cost effective solutions available

Are these related to audio? If so what are they, please?

There are too many to mention
Ive just come back from work so I'll email you tonight all the features.

I was going to recommend you take a free months trial of jriver so I can hear what you think going from room experience to jriver.
I'd suspect you'd find it far more complex at first.

I'm not averse to trying, but I'd doesn't meet my requirements to start with. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I need something that allows for lossless streaming, FIR based DSP and so I can operate it headless preferably on Linux, with an Android phone as a remote. I also don't care for any other functionality such as video. In fact I'd rather not have it.

From what I've read you can't do streaming with Jriver, if that's the case it's a non starter. Audirvana would be a nice alternative to Roon but it's only Mac at the minute. It's supposed to come to Windows but I'll do anything to avoid running Windows.

And as a side note. I see it as a massive compliment, and so would guys at Roon, that you see Roon as not that complex. It goes to show how well it is made and how much thought went into the design.

Saying all that I could always do a trial on a laptop just to see what else have they come up with. It wouldn't be with an option to buy if it can't give me the above mentioned features.
