Andrew Everard:
No conspiracy, no pouring of cold water - just want to make sure I do a thorough job before presenting any opinions, and believe it or not I do have other things to do, just as the magazine has other products to review.

We're not going to put everything else on hold just to review one Blu-ray player, however good or otherwise it may be.

Looks like the prophesy is true.

I feel like like Ian though.

How's it coming along Andrew? I see the Pioneer 52 is up on the site. Lovely looking player, but convincingly underspecified in comparison. The image and sound quality must be top notch for it to have garnered 5*s. How is the speed of operation?

On the subject of which, have you found the Oppo to be noticably faster than other machines currently available? It's certainly one of the plus points in use for me. As is the pressing of the yellow button (I think it's that one) that skips you through the intro's and warnings etc, straight to the start of the feature, when it's able to. Brilliant idea, especially on the DVD of Charlie Wilson's War for which there is a 4 minute HIV video about Africa, which is worth seeing once, but becomes rather tedious to sit through on the next viewing occasion. Can't skip it, forward it, jump it or anything, but that yellow button on the Oppo remote, just skips you right past and onto the film. Now that's a feature!

Enjoy the weekend.

A good feature, and surely the only feature you need on top of play, stop and load?

I'm not sure I understand where either of you are coming from.

You're clearly very much of one view, I just can't fathom what it is. Maybe it's just me! Enjoy the weekend anyway chaps.

What are useful features then Will? Isn't it like a CDP? Load. Play. Stop. Eject.

Why the sarcasm?

Some of the remarks on here baffle me. You're on a forum for hi-fi, and yet you take the mick ruthlessly. Why?

There are a few things that the Oppo does that are really very useful and handy indeed. Why don't you give it a try and let me know what you think? Far more constructive than constantly sniping whenever I post about it.

Review will be a great read I'm sure. Let's see what it says.

I guess cos I think there are some things in life that are more important than home cinema. And yes, I'm afraid that includes the Oppo Blu-Ray player - Heaven forfend!

I guess the worrying aspect is you're not actually sure what we think is more important....

Ive just read this post.well skimmed it actually, and it is pretty unnerving that a blu ray player can attract so much attention.I ignored this post til now but seen the pages of posts getting ridiculously large so my nose got the better of me.

To anyone who bought this player, why do you care so much what any of the What Hifi team think? If youre happy then great. Are you going to sell it if it doesnt get enough stars or Andrew thinks it takes 2milliseconds too long to load ?

I have agreed and disagreed with What Hifi reviews in the past and would not buy anything just because they say its good. What Hifi reviews are,IMHO, designed to give you a shortlist and ideas. Nothing more. A 3 star product may be a 5 star product to your ears.

But at the end of the day.Sorry to blaspheme.

Its only a b#@#@y dvd player!

Stick on a film and enjoy it.

Overall yes, but, surely when you come here, it's because you want to talk about Hi-Fi and Home Cinema, otherwise, what are you doing here? I can see where Will's coming from (this time), this IS a discussion about a particular piece of hardware, so it isn't logical to dismiss any discussion of that hardware just because you think one of the people discussing it is a bit odd (no offence Will...).

I guess the worrying aspect is you're not actually sure what we think is more important....

I'm sure Will has far more important things in his life, but when he comes here, this is what he wants answers on. Compartmentalised priorities, it's not that difficult a concept to grasp.

Incidentally Will, the LX52 is very well specified (multi-channel analogue outs not withstanding, grrrr), for a Blu-Ray player. The Oppo isn't a Blu-Ray player, it's a Universal Player, so naturally it's going to have more features.

I'd be interested in a comment on the loading times of the new Pioneer players as well though, pretty sure people have requested that in BDP player reviews before, but it still doesn't seem to be getting a look in.

Bit where my thoughts are at the moment. The Oppo BDP-831 seems almost obsessive in some quarters at the moment.

This is now officially my favorite thread!!!

And some suggested closing it! They didn't consider not reading it if it's not to their taste.

Must be like those people that complain about a TV program and don't consider turning over the channel!

In which case buy a budget Sony or Panasonic which won't play MKV files, SACD or DVD-Audio, not forgetting they can't make a DVD look like a blu-ray. Not everyone wants that, but some of us do. If you don't want that, don't read the Oppo thread, if you do, you heard it from us first. Not obsessive, just passing on our thoughts on how it compares to other players we've had or seen, it is a forum you know.

Why did this get 5 stars? I'd have a word with WHF if I was you Joel, it's only got a stop & play button etc., it hasn't even got any internal decoding! (Please excuse the sarcasm, I don't what came over me).

Andrew Everard:

pete321:Why did this get 5 stars?

Performance for the money, same as always.

But according to Joel, they all just need a stop and a play button.

I'm looking forward to this review too. For a couple of years now, I've been asking about a blu/sacd combo player, and it appears this one is specced sufficiently to fit the bill. Fingers crossed.......

JohnHolmes:Well the amazing Oppo DVD player got a shocking 3 star review by What HiFi which got superb reviews everywhere else. Makes you wonder.....

Odd review this one as What HiFi seemed to like the 983 just thought in the day of Blu Ray £370 or whatever it is now is too much to pay. However the YBA YM501 recently got 4* and is £800 so not quite sure how that works??
