I defer to the expertise and experience of Clare in this matter but it is not going to induce me to invest in a format that is still limited in choice just to say I have one.

Sorry (Tom) if some of my movie tastes are considered 'niche' but I cannot help that. I am not interested in a format that does not serve me yet. That would just be technology for it's own sake.

One day/year maybe.

I never said that you should invest in the format. It doesn't matter to me if one's tastes are niche or mainstream, certain products are going to be better suited for different types of consumers. For your needs I would certainly agree that a Blu-ray deck would probably be completely unnecessary. If I were you the only situation where I might purchase one would probably be if my DVD deck died and I figured I didn't want to buy a new one that I might be looking to replace with a BD machine in a year or two (seeing as the BD deck will play your DVDs now). It's horses for courses. All I'm saying is that I think people are very quick to jump all over a new format in it's infancy because of one or another's group that it isn't yet fully catering to, and that we should all have a little bit more realistic expectations. Give the format a good 5-6 years on the market and everyone's niche should be well served, and if it isn't- then moan and complain to your hearts' content because at that point it really would be unacceptable. This will be our third Christmas since Blu-ray was launched so the next couple of years should see it reaching full maturity. I think the 2012 date, as Claire mentioned, for full maturity of the format should be pretty spot on.

Actually, Chebby, I think you should buy one.

It would be more than technology for technology's sake for you. First of all, the quality gain to your DVD collection's picture would be quite excellent. Secondly, you'll be free to buy a title on BluRay and start, at least, to move over to that format as and when it suits you.

If you bought the forthcoming Oppo 831, then you'd not only have one of the very best DVD upscalers (in my opinion) but you'd also have a deck capable of outputing via coaxial or optical or even 2 or 8 channel analogues to whatever amp you have. Simply put, I can't see how you could lose.

Now, you may come back and say, I'd lose 450 smackers. I think this is the part when you make the choice to upgrade. And it would be an upgrade. From the moment you put your first BluRay in you'll notice the clarity of the picture, the depth and increased width to the sound. You need high end speakers and a good amp to make the most of it, but the benefits of the Oppo are many, including SACD and DVD-Audio compatibility. Now you may say, you don't have any or couldn't care less, but frankly I'd be surprised if that were true as you're on this forum.

More than anything buying a BluRay player and particularly the Oppo because of it's universal player credentials, opens the door. As morpheous said, "you're the one that has to walk through it." Hope you do but you have my full respect if you don't.

So, Chebby - are you ready to let Oppo into your life?

Will, I would lose the ability to record to DVD and HDD and I would lose the built in Freeview tuner too. (With the Oppo).

I already 'upscale' with HDMI connected betwixt DVD and TV and I already connect the optical digital audio ouput to an external DAC so no worries about sound quality for my (stereo) needs.

My present player/recorder is fine. Both TV and DVd have built in Freeview tuners so things are nice and tidy with no extra boxes and I can record anything on HDD (even Radio) and watch a TV programme or a DVD at the same time.

Surely someone can photoshop a picture of the Oppo under his arm?

Can't you find a picture of Moses with his tablets that you can swap for an Oppo?

Perhaps the stone tablet will be a good enough match.

From what I remember of my bible Charlton Heston, that didn't work out well for the tablets.

It is but an Oppo's-throw across the river to this NRA-affiliated institution...

The NRA are doing a good job delivering essential infrastructure in a challenging economic climate. Give 'em a break!

(in fairness, it could have been much worse if they were "Irish" rather than "National"...)

Would you mind my borrowing the review model to test how far "an Oppo's-throw across the river" actually is?
