Clare Newsome:Just spoke to Oppo, who confirmed it's website gremlins that are holding up the online launch. They realise how much interest there is out there, but everyone's just going to have to be patient - the site should be up "soon" (maybe next week).

I think ill be waiting until people post that theyve received theirs with no problems...........

I think I`m with you on this one. Just how long have they been planning this `launch` only for it to fail miserably. Just how do they know how much interest there is exactly? Interest does not fill a bank account, and my interest in the unobtainable doesn`t last long.

I'd hardly say developing a superb Blu-ray player is 'failing miserably'!

This is exactly why we didn't want to publish anything early, because we knew it would create demand before Oppo was possibly read to fulfil. (And to be fair to Oppo, they asked us not to publish until the site was up and running).

But you all kept on and on and on and on..... Be careful what you wish for!

oh course one could argue that interest does indeed fill a bank account!

But surely if Oppo knew they were not ready they could have told WHF to post a possible delay, not just leave a void?

Apart from the gushing reviews of the product, Oppo appear to be extremely responsive to any problems. Building a reliable easy to use e-commerce site is non trivial and I imagine Oppo don't want the first impression of UK shoppers to be unfavourable.

Ah, but until yesterday, when the site did not go live as planned, they didn't know there was going to be a delay.

Launching anything online is fraught with unexpected setbacks (and costs!), as we know!

I very much doubt Oppo themselves are developing the website or certainly not anyone designing the player! I would have thought they are hiring a design team. In any case, I'm not sure how much involvement the European outlet are having although What Video in their recent review described Oppo as a Swedish firm. I had gathered development had been in California according to the beta-testers in the US.

Claire - how comes What Video have published when What Hi-Fi were asked to delay?

You'd need to ask them that - different magazine, different publishing company, different rules. As we've stated many times, our policy on WHF is not to publish reviews until we're sure of pricing and availability info. Not everyone is so scrupulous.

And to clarify, we chose to delay until we had that info; if it was up to Oppo, we still wouldn't have even published the blog...

Surely Mr Duncan is a decent sort who will work for a Cheese&Pickle sarnie and a pint of ale?

I've just had an e-mail from the Opposhop, advising me that the BDP-831 will be available late October at the earliest! I hope they're being unduly pessimistic!

It seems we can all put away our credit cards for a while longer.

Ahahahahahahahahahahaha. "I like you. You're funny, and you're nicely shaped. And frankly, it's ludicrous to have these interlocking bodies and not...interlock. Please remove your clothing now."

Or not put our credit cards away at all and simply buy something else.

Even if the Oppo does come in top of the blu-ray (group) tests, if they can't deliver it to market in reasonable time then I'm simply going to buy the next best thing and I'm sure I'm not alone on this one. Their lack of execution does make you doubt their commitment to the European market and customers, so perhaps, the next best (and available) product isn't such a bad choice.

OK couple of things: Oppo is based in California, but the European online shop has been based in Sweden. Read the rest of the review with that level of accuracy in mind.

Oppo supplied review samples to various publications, requesting that we held fire with reviews until distribution and pricing details were in place. This seemed reasonable to us, but that other publication chose to jump the gun in the quest for a spurious 'exclusive', which is why the rest of the reviews then began to appear.

I seem to remember that either in this epic thread or another, Clare had said a product has to be priced and available to buy on or before the 14th October to be considered for the Awards. Does the Oppo (and potentially the Sony BDP-S760 at this rate) therefore face disqualification if we are looking at late October ?

Apologies if I have misunderstood. If I haven't, have you got a contingency plan. Alot of mags to recall!

20th October, actually - day the mag/website goes on general release.

That was exactly my thought as I read the first para (in a newsagents!!). I understand from Claire, WHAT Video is nothing to do with WHAT Hi-Fi; when I asked why one was publishing and not the other, the WHAT name had made me think both were part of the WHAT CAR/HI-FI/CURRY DO I HAVE TONIGHT etc chain.

Ok thanks Clare, I stand corrected. But even if these players become purchasable on 20th, it would still seem odd that products you can't buy are in contention for Awards which will be announced at the Show on 17th/18th, and in the mag that can be bought at the Show.

Thanks,

Mr Nittpicky

Remember that the Awards are about so much more than the first few days after the results come out - they will have an effect on sales through Christmas and well in 2010.
