If Cyrus were...

I've just been pondering the pro's and cons of Cyrus, and the several other manufacturers that make half width components. Would people be more inclined to try or buy Cyrus if it were the standard, full size hifi, or is it a case of size doesn't matter. If I'm being honest, I've probably been put off trying Cyrus, purely because of the looks.

Me to, they don't seem to of made much of an effort to update the chassis. Having said that perhaps just as well !

Case size doesn't matter, but components that look like they were designed to fit the interior of a 1970's Ford Capri have no place in a contemporary interior, unless of course, it's the set of 'Abigail's Party'. *biggrin*

Seriously, Cyrus' product design department needs a new Creative Director.

Cyrus kit imo looks pretty smart in the flesh.

Looks better than the efforts of Roksan, Marantz and a fair few others.

Only issue I have with the brand is its modular concept.

Anyone wanting to sell a stand alone amp for the price they do then talk about selling a PSU that will improve it ..... No.

didn't know you loved the Muso that much!!*acute*

Cyrus :)

I have to admit the Muso was on my list but in the end I couldn't even be bothered to go and listen to one yet. Then there were the ADM's, the Abrahamsen ... :)

So instead I have just ordered a push bike from Germany, next best thing :)

I'm not averse to half-width components: I like the idea of a discreet half-width rack hidden away. But where do you put the full-width Bluray player? Shame nobody makes them. Of course, you could turn a Bluray 90 degrees, but you'd then see all the wires at the back.

As for the Cyrus Lyric, it is possibly the ugliest piece of hifi equipment I've ever seen, and yes, I have seen one in the flesh. Has ANYONE actually bought one? Cyrus must have caught a major cold with that one. No doubt a fair bit of R&D cost with little (or no) return.

Canyon :)

Back to the OP, beauty is in the eye of the beholder but personally, I think the magnesium alloy cases and green displays are both stylish and iconic, especially if used with one of the company's racks.

The casings being one of the most expensive items in a product, I can understand cyrus wanting to hold on to it as all the tooling has been long paid for (I believe the cases are made in skandinavia for cyrus).

Would anyone else want to do something similar these days the cost would probably be prohibitive, likely substantially more than the often used mild steel/milled alu fronts.

As to the Lyric, some have said it looks nicer in the flesh than on pictures and it does have great reviews for s/q and offers good functionality.

Try the Panasonic DMP-BBT01 or Samsung BD-ES6000.

Those are older models but they are tiny.

I had a CD6SE for a while, a thing of beauty it was not, but it sounded pretty darn good. For looks alone, I think Yamaha have got is sussed right now, but back in the day, I though Sansui were the mutts nuts. There is something about those lozenge shaped push buttons, and the looks-like-its-hewn-from-a-solid-billet appearance of the rocker switches. You cannot beat a big flat panel of brushed aluminium covered in them, with a couple of nice big fat rotary knobs on for good measure too. Add a couple of power meters and it's truly audioporn. An amp has to be large, a huge box to convery the impression of power! You cannot have a box that is too big, can you Hegel?
