Angus Young - Thunderstruck

Has anyone mentioned Jack White (most of the second Raconteurs album)? Or Johnny Marr? Bit rhythm-y rather than solo-y, perhaps... How about John Frusciante? The Hold Steady (particularly Boys & Girls in America) is guitar awesomeness. Davy Graham's Angi is still amazing.

Nile Rodgers - Spacer by Sheila B Devotion and Savoir Faire by Chic

Steve Cropper - Green Onions

Jorma Kaukonen - Wooden Ships by Jefferson Airplane

Norman Harris - Children of the Night by the Stylistics

Grant Green - We've only just Begun

Al Perkins - Ain't that a lot of love by the Flying Burrito Brothers

I think rhythm guitar is worth another thread - Ronnie Wood on I Don't Want to Discuss it and My Way of Giving (Rod Stewart's Gasoline Alley) are object lessons in the art.

PowerBook G4; Benchmark DAC1 HDR; Quad 405-2; Spendor S3/5s

I really wouldn't know where to start on this one, but the one which has really stuck with me is Gilmour's riff at the end of "Comfortably Numb".

I still clearly remember peering through my binoculars (yes, really!) at Earls Court almost 30 years ago when he was stood on top of the wall letting this rip. Pure magic.

Forgive me if this's already been mentioned... Free Bird by Lynyrd Skynyrd, love it!

Sugden A21L amp, Naim CD5XS CDP, Chord Cobra3 i.c. ProAc Studio 130 speakers

In addition to those gone before, I offer up one Michael Schenker. "Into the Arena" is magnificent

I love the Steve Hackett solo on Firth of Fifth and - although some die-hard Genesis fans might not agree - I think that Daryl Stuermer does a pretty good job on the recent Live tour, especially the DVD.

Very untrendy I know, but what about Tony Peluso on the Carpenters' 'Goodbye to Love?

BTW, one of my best concert memories is hearing Dire Straits on their first tour at Uni in the College Dining Room playing to about 200 people. We stood at the front, about 10 feet away from Mark Knopfler playing 'Sultans' and all the rest. They were enjoying themselves so much, I think they did about half an hour of encores!

DIB:I once went to see Joe Satriani & Steve Vai. Technically brilliant, played at a trillion miles per hour most of the time, left me totally cold. Souless.
im sorry but i totally disagree with this. Joe Satriani has done some incredibly heartfelt solos in his time. True, not all his stuff is emotional but neither is all of it played at a trillion miles an hour.
if in doubt about Joes ability to portray emotion in his playing just check out:
Cryin' and Rubina's Blue Sky Happiness from the album The Extremist
Always With Me, Always With You and Echo from Surfing With The Alien
Flying In A Blue Dream and The Forgotten from Flying In A Blue Dream
Rubina(live) from Time Machine

yeah? whats your point? thats hetfield playing the main solo at 6:34 in your link...?

Just that i like Hammett guitar playing at the beginning and at 5 minutes through, they are some of my favourites guitar solos, which he clearly does it the song in the link i provided, if i had preferred Hetfields solo i would have said so....

thats fine, i just thought you were referring to the main solo. totally with you on the fade to black thing though, i think its probably the best song they've done which makes it a real shame that they never seem to play it live much...

no problem - its amazing how disappointing some live performances can be. i love Dream Theatres albums but when i finally got to see them live i was so disappointed with the mix, atmosphere and the fact the singer walked off stage when he wasnt singing and the guitarist sat down that ijust walked out...

The notoriously tetchy Van Morrison did that when I went to see him a
few years ago. Everytime there was a break in the lyrics, and his
admittedly superb band took over, he just wandered off and then came
back a minute or two later. Hardly spoke to or even acknowledged the
audience at all. Miserable sod.

Not really a solo as it goes on through the whole song, but Keith Richards, experimenting with his tuning on Gimme Shelter always does it for me
