Richard Thompson - most of his stuff, really

Carlos Santana - again, lots

Django Reinhardt - what can you say?

Do you just want rock guitarists? There are some brilliant flamenco, Fado, jazz and various Latin American guitarists.

The Church - Blood Money . Hair raising !

Pluto - Paste . Best Canadian band guitar solo I've heard .Short but sweet .

Saga - Worlds Apart . It's the name of the album . There's a couple on this disc .

Devo - Uncontrollable Urge . If not for the solo , the guitar work gets me going . As well as the vocals .

off of the top of my head: pretty much any Dave Gilmour solo. He's not fast, but for timing and musicality I think he's hard to beat.

Define "Best"?

Impossible.

Anyway, my favourite, Tony T.S.McPhee on Split Pt 2 off the Groundhogs' Split album. Still gives me goosebumps nearly 40 years later.

Good point.

I once went to see Joe Satriani & Steve Vai. Technically brilliant, played at a trillion miles per hour most of the time, left me totally cold. Souless.

There's a clip on Youtube of Robin Trower playing "Daydream". An object lesson in the aforesaid timing and musicality. Well worth looking at.

Anything played by John Lees (Barclay James Harvest), including his guitar playing on the 1974 Live EP of Medicine Man, and this solo in 'Nova Lepidoptera' from the famous Berlin gig: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gVDrMgCdia8
Lees isn't the world's most technically stunning guitar player (alhtough he is very good), but everything he plays cuts straight to the heart.

The following clip of him playing the solo at the end of 'After The Day' in 2006 really demonstrates the sheer emotion in his playing:

Richard Thompson is incredible live. I've had the privilege of seeing him twice and his solo in 'Hard On Me' is incredible as you can see/hear:

Another great guitarist is Ralph McTell. His rag playing on an acoustic is wonderful:
