A good rummage through the record boxes at a local charity shop produced some classics, in every sense. All for less than two quid each, and all in very nice condition.
Shostakovich Symphony 9 / Prokofiev Lieutenant Kije Suite - Sir Malcolm Sargent / LSO. Plays beautifully but worth the money just for the album cover, a colourful chorus line of dancing Russian peasant girls in traditional dress, it's hard to tell if it's a painting or a crudely retouched photograph.
Siblelius Symphony No 1 in E Major - Sir John Barbirolli / Halle Orchestra.
Bruckner Symphony No 4 'Romantic' - Klaus Tennstedt / Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra
Bach Harpsichord Recital - Chromatic Fantasia and Fugue, Italian Concerto, Toccata in D, French Suite No 5 - George Malcolm
Simon and Garfunkel - Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme - one of those albums I never got around to buying at the time, the liner notes are a great reminder of how wonderfully naive life was in those days.
