'Wow, that's quite some haul, there. Some excellent symphonies, and a few I don't know. And Flanders and Swann to round it off, wonderful. Hope they're in good nick.'

Hi, SP. Yes, they all play nicely. The seller has obviously bought a house clearance, (there are occasional notes against the album track listings, all in the same handwriting), which I'm slowly working my way through. The original owner obviously took great care of his / her records, all in lovely nick. The Flanders and Swann looks / sounds like it may have only been played once or twice.

hi, I'm intrigued to hear how the Carcass record sounds. I've just bought the Human reissue and think it sounds incredible. Assume the heartwork is the FDR?

yeah, I already have Swansong on coloured FDR which does sound really good.

ill let you know once it has arrived.

and yeah, it sounds really good. incredibly clear.

get it bought.

also, if you like carcass, you probably like Death too. i got Human on remastered re-release, that sounds fantastic.

way better than the cd.

id say, get them both... i got them from music magpie for under 30 quid for the pair, with free delivery.

took around two weeks, but worth the wait.

becuaee I'm saving for some half decent headphones.

But have got a few pre-orders placed.

Best of the bunch is the new 4x 180g new remaster of Marillion's - Misplaced Childhood. Comes signed by the big man himself, plus a 36 page colour booklet. Due July. £66 with recorded post.

Already have five copies of this ranging from 1985's original version to the 2012 180g remaster. One of my absolute favorites. I never got into the Steve Hogarth fronted Marillion, to my ears like bad elevator music trying too hard.

Pre-ordered. Unkle's limited addition (of 1000) coloured 2x 180g version of their new album - The Road. Again this is signed presumably by James Lavelle with 30 a odd page booklet thrown into the set.

Pre-order of London Grammars forthcoming album. Not overly excited by this based on the stuff I've heard but like most I absolutely loved their first effort.

Lastly, a pre-order of Icelandic metal band (although they remind me a little of a heavy Sigur Ros at times) Solstafir's album - Berdreymin.

That's my lot, now back to saving.

I went to my local HMV to get the Alice Jemima debut album on vinyl...only to discover they didn't have it. It seems like they only have the best-sellers in stock and everything else is order in through their web site. So I did...it's too good to miss. :)

Chip Wickham - La Sombra

Meandering through Soho a couple of evenings ago, as I passed Sounds of the Universe on Broadwick St some really cool jazz flute was wafting from the doorway. Stuck my head inside the shop, caught the last half hour of a live set by Chip Wickham on flute accompanied by Matthew Halsal on keyboards.

Went back today to buy Chip's album.

I was hoping the Charlie Parker Savoy box was going for a lot more than that!!! Loads of critics rate the Savoy stuff as his best, but not I 'cause I is awkward; nope, I prefer the Dial recordings. Not that the Savoys are cabbages or anything; in fact, they;re brilliant! The Verve stuff and any live recordings are brilliant too. I'm a Bird obsessive; it would be my Mastermind subject. I'd be f***** in the General Knowledge round though!

It goes for a fair bit more on Discogs etc. I was lucky, the seller was the guy that does the show after me, and he always sells stuff cheaper than the book prices, and I annoyed him so much with my derisory offers, he just wanted me to go away. We have a love/hate relationship. *biggrin*

So it does...thank the Lord for that! There should be a booklet with it; it's not much cop though. What label is the 'Coltrane Live In Paris' on? Or is it a boot or some Italian job?

My old man reckons some of the later recordings when he was off his face are awful, but I don't know enough about them to voice an opinion.

Well there's the Dial recording of 'Lover Man' from 1946 or 47 which is where you can really hear him falling apart; he was sectioned not long after that. It's an interesting listen, although I find it horribly ghoulish. Apart from that, he's pretty consistently brilliant whether off his trolley or not. The Verve sides from the 50's are good and more inspired than most people's best stuff, but they lack a bit of the intensity of the Dials and Savoys; some people swear by them.

...I was thinking Affinity or Pablo. I think I've goy a copy somewhere; I'll dig it out and give it a spin. I've been a bit off Coltrane for a year or so; I used to like his meandering 20 minute solos, but give me a nice concise solo these days...like the Blue Note players: it's your turn, get in and get out within 2 or 3 minutes,

I played a bit of it earlier, and to me, the live recording really lacks the clarity and attack of the studio recordings. Quite disappointing, as I had it turned up loud too.

I might sell it, and buy a good studio album instead.

Sorry if I've blasphemed, but I want to have the intruments in and around me, not the other side of the garden.

I've just come across the perfect band for your next Transmitter Down show on Discogs:

Za Frûmi is melodic mood music from a dark fantasy setting. Centered around a wayward group of orcs, and their adventures in deep forests and mysterious castles. Deep flutes, rythmic drums and atmospheric ambience combine to grant enthusiasts everywhere a unique experience.

Ahem.

For the first time in years, Record Store Day had a couple of releases I was actually interested in. Thankfully my wonderful local record shop man managed to get them both for me. Picked up the second today:

Steve Reich / LSO – Clapping Music / Music for Pieces of Wood / Sextet

Bought what looks like an unplayed double album of Mahler's 6th symphony for a quid.

I now have Mahler's 1st, 4th, 6th, and 8th, but I'm always looking out for the other symphonies.

Go for the 9th - just incredible, especially the final movement.

I will get in touch soon, but not via Farcebook, oh no, oh no.

Bought today: Burial – Subtemple / Beachfires 10"

Will be playing that tomorrow, and I hope it's a better effort than his last release, which was quite lacklustre.
