After months of debating finally decided on a panny px3780b but yesturday someone reported screen burn from the disney channel logo. This has now concerned me as the most watched channels in our house are discovery and living, all which have permanent logos on screen. I know people say switch over but you get a tele to watch what you want don't you.

This burn seems to be brushed over with the new plasma's on this forum but how much of a problem is this really. I don't want to keep leaving the tele on overnight washing the screen as people suggest, what a waste of energy. Honest answers guys.

Thanks

I decided to go with Pio PDP5090 and I am also concerned about these issues having been a longtime LCD viewer. I was assured that, apparently on most modern Plasma screens, that screen burn was a thing of the past but problems on these and other forums seem to suggest otherwise. So a proffesional bit of input would be nice.

To the OP, Sorry to jump on in your thread, but I am the same boat as you, My son watches Disney and Cbeebies and the missus seems to be prone to a bit of Living now and then lol

I have the 37PX80 and the wife watches lots of Living programs and I watch lots of SKY sports programs and 24 News (sad I know). They all have logos, banners, tickertapes etc... I havent seen any retention at all. As long as you watch a mix of programs you wont have a problem.

Screen burn is a serious and permanent problem and no warranties cover it either, the good news is it doesn't seem to happen any more. I certainly haven't seen it on my px80. Far more common though is image retention and i have seen this a couple of times on my set with sky news, It soon fades though by using snow or another channel though. Running in your set should reduce its occurance and help prevent screen burn (keep settings below half first 200 hours) as should using lower settings generally, but it's not a permanent problem in any case. The only thing to really be wary of is gaming, this displays lots of solid static really bright images for as long as you play (health bars, invetnory's etc) and maybe could permanently damage your screen, from experience i know that a couple of hours is fine, just turn the channel when its toilet time!

This sounds quite positive thanks. This couple of hours you talk about though, whewn the missus watches charmed, americas next top model, britains version of the same and grays anastomy it can be bloomin hours. Anyone got a similar loved one that is causing havoc in their choice of beloved tv set??

I hear what you say about the toitet break but is a couple of minutes all it takes to clear the image retention stuff? I suppoes I could always can the sky mix with living on it---------------------- although not sure if screen burn is less of an issue than the missus if I do!

Any kinfo on this from the What hifi team?

Can I guarantee you won't get screen burn? No. My plasma (about 3 years old) gets image retention from gaming - at one point I fell asleep and had the same image on my screen for about 6-7 hours. This isn't unusual for me. After a few seconds playing any standard TV channel, the ghost image has gone.
It's not a guarantee that everything will be okay with your plasma, just my experience. I've yet to see the opposite being reported.

Most modern Plasmas have technologies to also help with the problem.

eg. Pioneer and Panasonic use orbiters - systems that move pixels around slightly to stop burn. Pioneer also have a sleep function which turns the screen off after a preset period of inactivity or a static screen display. I once accidentally left a DVD on pause on my 428XD Kuro (all night as I forgot when I left the room and went to bed thinking it was turned off). Next day I came down to find the screen fine and the tv turned off by the screen protection mode.

As others have said, screen burn / retention is much reduced these days anyway. There are no guarantees, but there's very little danger from normal usuage. As always, gaming is the biggest danger although most seem to report no problems with this either. Personally, I'd rather keep consoles off my screen to be sure. My system is strictly cinema and Freesat. For gaming, I'd personally prefer to buy a seperate fast response LCD for peace of mind.
