What is DVD-video?

Is this a stupid question ? I was looking at the spec in the products listings in the back of the mag for the new £400 Pana DMP-BD55. I noticed there's no tick (well dot) in the column for 'DVD-video'.

So does this mean.

a) it doesn't play DVDs?

b) DVD-video is something different from DVD?

c) It's a mistake ?

Sorry is sounds daft but I'm a little confused...

Hi Roger, apologies for the confusion, looks like a printing error. The DMP-BD55 (like all Blu-ray players) does indeed play DVD-Video, which is just another term for standard DVDs.

The reason we sometimes make the distinction is that there's another (audio) format called DVD-Audio for multichannel sound, and the term DVD-Video is used to distinguish between the two.

I'll let the Buying Guide editor know so we can correct the data in the back of the mag. You can check out the full (correct) tech specs here online.

Thanks Andy - that puts an end to that head-scratching!

A last - a more affordable machine that decodes all HD formats AND has mutli channel analogue output. I think if the price heads south a little more on the run up to Christmas I may just take the Blu-ray plunge!
