Hi all,

I recently found your review of the KDL-40W5810 very interesting as I am very keen on purchasing a new LCD TV; however, I am actually looking for a 50"+ TV and therefore would like to know whether or not to apply the same review to all other models in the series. So in other words, if you rate highly a 42" TV model, then can one assume the 50" model is also worth considering?

Hope that makes sense.

Thanks in advance.

It's not wise to apply the review of a TV of one size to a model of a different size from the same range: the display panel will probably have been sourced from a different factory, and in some cases even from a different manufacturer.

Why is that though, do the manufacturers use different people to make the screens at various sizes? If a TV is good at 42 in, then you would think the model at say 47in would be good too.....

It's a question of supply, and the fact that screens of different sizes are often cut from different sizes, or 'generations', of mother glass in order to make the most economical use of materials.

So it's quite possible that the displays for one size may be made on a completely different line, in a different factory, or even by a different manufacturer, to another.

It's worth reading Andrew's answer above again.[EDIT - Both of them!]

In addition to that, there's the issue of scaling. If, for example, a TV doesn't have the best upscaling ability, that may not be apparant on a 32in set, where it's not having to work so hard with SD images. Move up to a larger set, however, and the upscaling shortcomings may become more apparant.

That's just one example of how sets within a range can differ by size, even if they are made in the same factory.

Outsourcing, Outsourcing,Outsourcing.......I wonder if two identical models of TV can even be said to be of the same image quality! If things were only made in JAPAN like before - now the goods became an 'EU made product' to aviod European Tafiff import duties .We used to be confident that a name stood for consistency and quality. If only everything made was as perfect as a VW GOLF! [Made in Germany by Germans.....aways]

What panels now go into the Sony EX,HX range that differ from the W and V range or is it the same batch???

Outsourcing and poor QA destroyed Toyota's reputation as the most valued CAR company in the world....they[company] didn't know what was fitted into the cars till troubles sparked??

The 'Art' of manufacturing in some sectors is truely lost.

And in Belgium, presumably by Belgians.

If TVs were still made in Japan they would a) be prohibitively expensive, and b) still use imported panels, the majority of which are manufactured in South Korea or Taiwan.
