Octopo:Are they obscure to you out in the far reaches Ray? I would love to hear the names of bands developing from the wastelands of Canada that I once so much hoped to belong to,They've been around a while actually but I've only just discovered them. Highly recommended, Grizzly Bear is another thumping good band. Although they're both American I believe.

If you want good Canadian music... Have you ever listened to the Tragically Hip? They're tragically unknown outside of our borders. Here I'll make a list of good new, and not so new Canadian fare.

Emily Haines - Knives Don't Have Your Back
Metric - Live it Out (indie-alt rock.. Can-American, although I bet you've heard of them)
Sam Roberts - We Were Born in a Flame
Tragically Hip - Hipeponymous
Feist - Let it Die (if you've not heard of Feist there are problems)
City and Colour - Sometimes

Those are all albums I can safely say are excellent and you've probably not run across over there.

Wish I was listenening to the lamb on sacd. Will make do with DTS and Stereo when santa does the rounds.

Just bought a Cyrus 6s, so am speed listening to a selection of my 250 cds - faves today are:

Robert Plant - fate of nations

Beach Boys pet sounds 40th Aniversary

Peter Gabriel - up

Steve Hackett - Spectral mornings

Jon & Vangelis (best of) - not impressed with the quality of this one - I last played this 10 years ago

and to keep the wife sweet - a selection form the Best of Neil Diamond (which sounds surprisingly good!)

ianandyr,

not impressed with my copy of the best of Jon & Frank Ellis.

Bought it when I got my first cd player in 86. It must have been one of my first purchases.

Sounds bright and undetailed. Is yours the version from polydor from that time? Would consider rebuying if it has been remastered because it was such a great album.

'Debut' by Sophie Cashell, the girl who won Classical Star on TV. She really is an exciting talent. Some beautifully sensitive playing on this disc. Her Liszt is especially good.

Pete Shields:Sounds bright and undetailed. Is yours the version from polydor from that time? Would consider rebuying if it has been remastered because it was such a great album.

Yes, and it's toppy I agree. Better though on my new system than it was, more detail and control on the top end.

Just been digging through my CD collection which in the main has been left in boxes since I moved to Northampton over the summer. Found 2 albums I've not listened to in ages-

Firstly: Agaetis Bryjun by Sigur Ros. Stopped what I was doing, loaded the disc sat down and let it all wash over me. I'd forgotten what a fantastic record this is. Particularly Viorar Vel Til Loftarasa. 10 minutes of magic.

Secondly: The sun is often out by Lonpigs. This is one of the most underrated albums of the Britpop age in my opinion. Brilliant from start to finish. I'm surprised it's only really Richard Hawley that has gone on to have solo success. Incidentally, I was at the 2006 Mecurys when Hawley was beaten to the prize by Arctic Monkeys. Hawley threw a strop during the press round when journalists repeatedly asked him what it was like to work with Jarvis Cocker instead of asking him about his solo material.....

After both of these, the evening has now gone and I've not done any of the chores I'd set myself. But. Who cares when you've taken such a rich trip down memory lane!

Magdalena Koczena's recent CD, 'Songs My Mother Taught Me'. Beautiful singing, beautiful accompaniment on both piano and guitar, beautifully recorded. A CD of top class artistry.

Spinning on the CDP over the last week or so -
Tom Petty & The Hearbreakers - The Anthology
CSN&Y - Carry On
JJ Cale - Anthology
AC/DC - Dirty Deeds...
CSN&Y - Deja Vu live
Pink Floyd - The final cut (better than remembered!)
Jeff Beck - Live at Ronnie Scott's (truly astonishing, wish I'd been there - had to make do with this cd & the 1hr BBC4 special)

Earlier - Gershwin - "Rhapsody in Blue". Stunning.

Currently - "PM" (Radio 4).

Later - Not sure yet!

Bach - Toccata and Fugue in D minor                    Taken from the cd by Classic FM, Organ spectacular.

The wife hates it, has threatened to hide the cd (but I have it on the server) but its fantastic!

Started off with a recording of Vladimir Ashkenazy playing the Tchaikovsky 1st Piano Concerto when he drew with John Ogden as winner of the 1962 Tchaikovsky Competition.

Then played Mahler Symphony No.5. The full orchestra sounded spectacular on my new system and I've noticed a much wider dynamic range than I'm used to.

Finished off with The Alan Parsons Project, 'Tales of Mystery and Imagination'. Fantastic album.

Today it's been 'Level 42 - greatest hits' (Can't find a pic)

'Leaving Me Now' is a great song and my favourite of theirs, I think they lost their way after the Gould brothers left.
