Hi Survivor

My box set arrived after yours (hence my original question). I have listened to Trespass (much improved, and the knife is just fantastic) Selling England (sounds great now) and The Lamb (my all time favourite, sounded pretty good before but is terrific in surround). I agree that they have done a particularly good job on Gabriel's voice. Even Collins sounds good on More Fool Me.

I think you will find the difference when you get a surround system to be huge. Nick Davis has done a very nice job on the surround without going mad on swirly effects and the bass sounds like it should (the house vibrates). Mike Rutherford uses bass pefdals a lot, but this version is the first to do them justice.

I believe they have pulled the individual albums - they have disappeared from the websites I have looked at. Apparently the majority of the sales of the other eras were in boxes.

Although there were a number of complaints about over compression with the other box sets, I do not hear it with this set.

There are the odd bits that I would change - the loud noise that accompanies "burnt it to ash" in Back in NYC has been mixed down too low for example, but overall I am very happy with this beautiful set. No other band has produced anything approaching this set of reissues ( All studio albums on dual disc SACD and accompanying DVD surround mixes and concert videos and interviews). It has taken along time but it has been worth the wait.

BTW, this set is selling twice the previous sets based on preorder figures. Restores my faith in human nature.

Hi Hammill,

Interesting about pulling the individual albums. I imagine they`ll be back but they`re probably just giving the box set a little time by itself to flourish. And after your news on the preorder figures it sounds like it is.

I feel fortunate to own a copy of this fabulous box set as I know a couple of pretty big Genesis fans who are having to wait for awhile before purchasing due to current financial constraints.

Compression wise it would appear they have listened to comments regarding the first two sets and have spent more time on this one to get it right. I mentioned mine sounds a touch bright but nothing too bad. Just a touch really. My amp (Pioneer) is fairly smooth and slightly understated if anything which I think helps with this sort of thing. My old JVC amp, more powerful but harsher sounding would I`m sure have struggled more. Infact, if I find the time I might go into the abyss, sorry loft, and dig it out for a listen. Just out of curiosity.

I agree with what you say regarding the lavish treatment. It`s fabulous. How I would love for someday to own such a set for all my favourite artists. I`m hoping that others will look upon these Genesis sets and say "That`s how we should be doing it". Here`s hoping.

Hoping to have a good listen to `Foxtrot` and `The Lamb` very soon.

Hope you continue to enjoy your set.

It is interesting to hear they have pulled the individual albums as I had read that they will be releasing the new versions as individual albums some time next year.

I'd say their best was probably 'Mr Fantasy' if you are looking for a starting point with Traffic.

Drummerdave:Anyone listen to any new music around here?

It does seem that way sometimes however to redress the balance some CD's I've bought in the last few months in no particular order or preference:

Songs in A&E by Spiritualized

(OH) Ohio by Lambchop

Chemical Chords by Stereolab

Little Dragon by Little Dragon

The Stand Ins by Okkervil River

Drummlesson Vol 1 by Christian Prommer's Drumlesson

A Guilded Eternity by Loop (not new I know but a classic nonethless)

Laneways EP by The Airfields

Gospel Bombs by Vincent Vincent & The Villians

Circus Money by Walter Brecker

Easy & The Sun by The Exploders

Life, Love & Learning by The Detroit Cobras

Evil Urges by My Morning Jacket

I do really need to stop buying so much music as I feel like a bloody junkie !

matthewpiano:Vinyl fest here tonight. Ralph McTell's 'Not Til Tomorrow' followed by 'Songs From The Wood' by Jethro Tull.

Sounds good!

The wonderful pianist Marc-Andre Hamelin's disc of jazz influenced works, 'In A State of Jazz'. For anyone interested in exploring it its on the Hyperion label, catalogue number CDA67656.

Rose Kemp - Unholy Majesty (vinyl) Stop press! This is actually a new album of new music released this very year! I should have warned you all to sit down first before breaking such news.

Very good album that, and not at all what you would expect from the daughter of Steeleye Span's Maddy Prior and Rick Kemp. Shes quite a looker as well...

You`re right Matthew, not what you`d expect at all. Listened to the title track on myspace and just had to buy the album. Was delighted to find it available on vinyl. Glad to hear you have it also.

A band called the National, got their LP "The Boxer."

Awesome. Great musical sense.

And any band with lyrics like: Stay out super late tonight picking apples, making pies
put a little something in our lemonade and take it with us..." is good in my books.

Are they obscure to you out in the far reaches Ray? I would love to hear the names of bands developing from the wastelands of Canada that I once so much hoped to belong to,

Christmas-Peace.jpg

It's a two-disc set: Christmas and Peace.

I'm not quite in the mood for the former yet, but the latter - a collection of Elvis's Gospel recordings - are proving very uplifting as I sit here working. I'm not religious, but Presley obviously was: the passion in his voice is incredible.

And, thanks to DSD remastering, the recording is awesome. Ladies and Gentleman, Elvis is IN the building

I'm mostly listening to GUN,the river sessions excellent 90's rock from Glasgow. also found lots of old songs I like on itunes from the 80's Marillion, the Black Crowes David Lee Roth, makes me feel i'm getting old. AS for Christmas don't mention it .

So far this afternoon:

Dvorak Symphony No.9 (LSO/Davis)
Chopin Ballades (Rubinstein) - SACD
Liszt Liebestraume No.3 (Sophie Cashell on the new Gramophone cover CD - WONDERFUL PLAYING)
Oscar Peterson Trio - Night Train (for the 4th time this week)
Grateful Dead - American Beauty

Rounding off now with Ella and Louis. Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong's first full album together, backed by the incomparable Oscar Peterson Trio. Fabulous. Sounds like they are actually playing in my room.
