Genesis - Nursery Crimes (sacd)

Your box set arrived? How does it sound?

Hi Hammill, just saw your post.

Yep, box set arrived on Monday. It`s early days yet but so far I`d say I`m pleased with purchase. Only played three albums as yet and haven`t managed to watch any of the DVD`s but hope to at weekend.

Soundwise, well they`re fairly loud and a little bright which isn`t unexpected but you can hear everything. Gabriels voice is very prominent and sounds great. Don`t normally tinker with sound but found that if I up the Bass by a notch that helps the brightness a bit. I know some people struggle with the loud volume of these discs on their systems but my amp isn`t all that powerful and I`m not finding the volume much of a problem. Back to Gabriels voice briefly, sounds particulary good on headphones. I don`t have a 5.1 system so I`m just playing on sacd 2 channel at the moment.

Although of course I want the cd`s to sound good I`ve bought these more than partially for the dvd material as if all had gone wrong with the cd`s (which it hasn`t) I still have my good old reliable vinyl editions to fall back on.

The first four albums are in jewel cases and the `Lamb` is in a special book cover like the extras cd. Was expecting this with the extras but not the `Lamb`.

I see you have the `Lamb`. Have you bought just this album or have you got the box set?

Hi Survivor

My box set arrived after yours (hence my original question). I have listened to Trespass (much improved, and the knife is just fantastic) Selling England (sounds great now) and The Lamb (my all time favourite, sounded pretty good before but is terrific in surround). I agree that they have done a particularly good job on Gabriel's voice. Even Collins sounds good on More Fool Me.

I think you will find the difference when you get a surround system to be huge. Nick Davis has done a very nice job on the surround without going mad on swirly effects and the bass sounds like it should (the house vibrates). Mike Rutherford uses bass pefdals a lot, but this version is the first to do them justice.

I believe they have pulled the individual albums - they have disappeared from the websites I have looked at. Apparently the majority of the sales of the other eras were in boxes.

Although there were a number of complaints about over compression with the other box sets, I do not hear it with this set.

There are the odd bits that I would change - the loud noise that accompanies "burnt it to ash" in Back in NYC has been mixed down too low for example, but overall I am very happy with this beautiful set. No other band has produced anything approaching this set of reissues ( All studio albums on dual disc SACD and accompanying DVD surround mixes and concert videos and interviews). It has taken along time but it has been worth the wait.

BTW, this set is selling twice the previous sets based on preorder figures. Restores my faith in human nature.

Hi Hammill,

Interesting about pulling the individual albums. I imagine they`ll be back but they`re probably just giving the box set a little time by itself to flourish. And after your news on the preorder figures it sounds like it is.

I feel fortunate to own a copy of this fabulous box set as I know a couple of pretty big Genesis fans who are having to wait for awhile before purchasing due to current financial constraints.

Compression wise it would appear they have listened to comments regarding the first two sets and have spent more time on this one to get it right. I mentioned mine sounds a touch bright but nothing too bad. Just a touch really. My amp (Pioneer) is fairly smooth and slightly understated if anything which I think helps with this sort of thing. My old JVC amp, more powerful but harsher sounding would I`m sure have struggled more. Infact, if I find the time I might go into the abyss, sorry loft, and dig it out for a listen. Just out of curiosity.

I agree with what you say regarding the lavish treatment. It`s fabulous. How I would love for someday to own such a set for all my favourite artists. I`m hoping that others will look upon these Genesis sets and say "That`s how we should be doing it". Here`s hoping.

Hoping to have a good listen to `Foxtrot` and `The Lamb` very soon.

Hope you continue to enjoy your set.
