Sticking with the status quo... for now.

After a lot of deliberation (and head banging) I've decided to bump out the digital factor for the forseeable. There's been a lot of discussion on countless threads of mine over the past 18 months or so. However, due to a lack of modtech nouse (and colossal amount of work) I can't be doing with DACs, servers, streamers etc.

Since Mr. Lemons attempts to produce home-made speakers I've really grasped - at long last - the roots of true hi-fi. For me hi-fi isn't delegated from a PC, more like a turntable, tuner, and good old-fashioned passive speakers.

Thanks to everyone, but if I start a thread about streaming and the likes over the next 12 months, please feel free to send a hit squad around.

Cheers, pp.

It might not be a bad choice. (Even if personaly I really like it)

To me, it's just the beginning of digital ( okay maybe we are at step two...) and plenty of development are coming in short and mid term. We are not set on 24-192 yet and 32 bits is knocking at the door. Plenty of new stuff we need to deal with and are still not sure about the impact and we don't master the domain yet. (bit perfect, digital cables, optic? speed for ripping wireless impact, etc etc etc)

Meanwhile let's all enjoy another song... or two ;-)

After much deliberation over the last few months I have decided to do the same....I like my CDs and I have added a power amp to my Arcam 85, and its a big improvement.

I fancy a whole new system but think its the wrong time to go with streamers.....in 2 years time there will be so much more choice. Also by then I will have a bigger budget hopefully.

I enjoy the streaming side for Spotify but the bulk of my listening is still CD based (with some vinyl too), and I can't see that changing. Spotify is great for trying out new things, but I still like having the proper CD. If you are enjoying what you have, why change it?

The other deciding factor is, oddly, being playing a lot of vinyl recently (past 3 months), and I've added another 300 records (approx) from my sisters house.

I've also decided to try and make room in the attic for the ones I don't use.

Plug 'n' play suits me fine for the next few months. The next definite upgrade will be the speakers.

Same here MP, not least for live albums or for lengthy classical works (just picked a 14-disc set of Wagner's "Der Ring des Nibelungen", for instance) where gapless playback isn't going to happen.

PP, it its starts to rain really heavily I'll make sure you get an invite to my boathouse party ;)

Thing is hi fi is not only about music; its OK to accept it's a hobby all of its own, and I'd be the first to accept that i really don't need any of this stuff to enjoy music, somtimes is just boys toys and all that. Nothing wrong with that, in fact as much right. It doesnt really matter whether you go digi or stay analogue, other than a gadget fun factor, and some small sonic improivements that you might *think* are better.

An interesting decision. I'm not a fan of digital, as you know, I have (am?) going through the mental handstands of Digital comitment, yes or no? . . . Where I am at now, and it suits me, is to have a simple single connection USB DAC that feeds direct to my 'Line in' on the amp. Using Spotify as a 'research test tool', when I hear a piece of music I like or see something recommended, I can usually find it on Spotify, do I like it or not . . . if yes, track it down on vinyl or the CD. I have acces to 'computer digital' in a simple form if I want it, with out total comitment and for me the frustrations of digital sound that I cant get away from.

I was going to get fancy and have a slave laptop set up by the sofa . . . but like you, I have decided its not worth the effort, complication or cash outlay.

Main source will remain Vinyl and CD's . . . the majority of my serious listening is now at Horlicks hour . . . usually 1 or 2 hours before bed, with Hazel by my side, we love our music, its a pleasure to share it together . . . surly thats the critical factor, enjoying the music the way you like it, and not worry about the 'toys'.

More power to you listening elbow PP

Thirty to forty years ago audiophilers mainly used tube amplifier and turntable for hifi listening. I did the same. I only switched to using CD players and solid state amplifiers about 15 years ago. Till today I only listen to stereo output and never on surrounds. As to digital streaming I don't think I will switch to this new technology not until CDs are phased out ;)

Whatever download route I go is going to cost money (even WITH the Olive), streamer, iPad or iPhone or laptop which will take me to a grand or so - I could pick up a nice pair of Totems for around £600 - £800 + a nice CD192 for the cost to kitting out a whole streaming requirements, as a minimum. I would get far more enjoyment from those two rather than faffing around with a technology I don't fully understand.

Let's face it, I'm not exactly disappointed with my set-up 'as is'.

PP, my advice given your current position, is to keep your powder dry until you hear something that has a profound effect on you....a small change/improvement will just not cut it.

I think the key is keeping abreast of what's out there, and listening to different kit whenever the opportunity presents itself.

It's about what gives the most pleasure, and that may well be vinyl.

That's my problem: Don't get time to go and listen, and TBH, whenever I think modtech I lose the will to live, almost.

During the week I'm working harder than ever, especially as it's coming to the end of the finacial year. And at the weekends Mrs. P wants to do her stuff, so it's a real struggle at the mo to even find time, without disrupting the routine.

So you've started a thread about something that isn't going to happen in your life and unless you are happy for the hit squad to come around, you don't want to start a thread about the very subject you don't want to have anything to do with?

All a bit "look at me" if you ask me; I'll send 'em round now if you like

Currently listening to: Daryl Jenifer - In Search of Black Judas

Not about 'look at me' type thread. It's purely because I've started so many darn threads over the past year and a half about various digital routes... bored with this technology, and don't feel comfortable either. It's plug 'n' play for the foreseeable.

Thats a bit heavy Gusboll . . . PP has the benefit of the threads and the information there-in, as does those that followed them, he has decided to stay where he is. Thats his prerogative and IMHO, probably the right decision.

I think that's fantastic advice Cno...trouble is I recently had a demo of the PMC Twenty.23s and they blew me away with their clarity and extended soundstage. Every day since I want to get the credit card out and then stop myself thinking that maybe I'll come across some even better speakers next week !!!

If you keep waiting for the next "big thing", you'd never buy anything.

Once I've been "blown away" by a product that I wish to buy, I do two things:

- Listen to the best the competition has to offer, at the same price.

- Check there's nothing in the wings for release in the very near future.

If it passes this test, I buy it.....if it sounds good now, it won't suddenly deteriorate just because the next "new improved" version comes along; though it's the marketing department's job to convince you otherwise. A genuinely good product stands the test of time.

As most of guys know, I am a pretty contented bunny - am vast majority of the time - and I love my set-up 'as is', and I think to chop 'n' change because... is a nonsense. Usually I pester many dealers, usually until they lose the will to live, but I always get a component that I'm 100% happy with. How often do I change my stuff?

Yes, good to keep up with new stuff and new fandangled formats, but one has to keep in perspective.

you also can't compare speakers with digital solutions in that respect. The changes in digital are much bigger and more fast paced tha speakers. Find a pair of speakers you love, and chances are you won't find anything better the next 5 years (in the same price range of course).
