Specs only tell part of the story, whereas listening makes up the rest of it.

You can't "do hifi" from behind a computer and get the full picture.

I completely agree.

Why is all theoretical knowledge and measurements of electronic engineering and psychoacoustics crammed into the term "specs"?

Too much theorizing overcomplicates the enjoyment of music...paralysis by analysis seems to be "your thing" (that and winding up the good members of this forum!).

Says the man who publishes manufacturer's White Papers about Class G amplification and articles about speaker stand decoupling shootouts with measurements. (not that I mind)

I certainly have no interest in winding up anyone.

As regards the A38, couldn't find anywhere that had dem example, and as it is hugely unlikely to be better than the Pulse, I pulled the plug on that idea.

How did you came to that conclusion? Sounds like a theory that needs to be tested.

14 unbroken years of owning Arcam amps and 6 years of owning their CDP is a good place to start, don't you think?

Ownership * Longevity ≠ Expertise.

Unless you learn the engineering and psychoacoustic aspect, you are a fan and a collector at best. Drinking Asda wine for 30 years does not make you a Sommelier.

First, if you know Arcam you would understand they, more than most have a common sound (DIVA and FMJ). Second, I heard not just my amps but A70, A80, A85, A18 + a few of the Alpha range (7, 8 and 9) and you get a pretty good idea of what Arcams can/can't do (hence why I haven't bother hearing the A19). Although have to admit I've not heard the flagship FMJs, along with knowing there isn't that much between any good amp £350-£1,000, nor between the Pulse and a Sugden (nearly twice the cost) then logic says there won't be much between the A38 and my amp*

*This is something Chebby and I agreed on boggit's thread Have a fun reading.

That's half of the story......I also report on Audio Shows, Musical Evenings and general demo sessions that I have attended, which makes up the other part.

This forum is made up of people who like the technical side of things and those who like the subjective feedback of a listening session.....so it makes sense to try and cover both angles. Everything in balance.

Good for you. But why do you think I don't visit events? Do you think B&W and Roksan are my first pair of speakers and amp? Do you think I don't listen to music on my 11 months old gear? I've been doing this hobby since I was 12, grew up with Heybrooks, Tannoy, Marantz, B&O, AR, JBL, Wharfedale, McIntosh, Sansui, Sony, Yamaha, etc.

Great, you like the subjective side of the hobby, sharing your experience. I like the technical side, I babble "specs." That does not mean my experience is lacking. Plenty of room for everyone to have their fun on the forum.

I don't personally have a problem with anyone quoting or linking spec sheets, however, there will be those who'll take that as Gospel and buy something that won't be to their taste/system/room.... Hi-fi is such a bloody minefield encouraging someone to listen to a combo/various combinations is a must to save wasting money and time.

Shame on you. With your experience of hearing the above could you not give more practical "hands on" advice, rather than throwing those spec sheets around like confetti?

I have 2000 posts, not all of them are confetti. I give first hand advice when possible and applicable. I can talk about Technics SL-1200MkII for days because I owned a pair, but I don't bother with vinyl now and I'm not interested.

"This amp goes with that speaker and that CDP..." It's utterly borring and repetitive to me. I look for more cerebral stimuli from this hobby than just hi-fi astrology.

Why so defensive?

I was not attacking you, but elaborating on my position as a result of your comments. I have a "live and let live" approach and try to bring anything to the forum which I believe is interesting, be it a white paper or a description of something I've heard.

If you have a hifi history, it would be good to hear about it.

Yeah great!

The thing is, as the OP very well knows himself, he's just joined the back of the queue for the carrousel of pain and is waiting paitiently for his turn whilst finishing off his toffee apple.

Awaiting the next angst ridden topic of indecision......
