Hi, Glad to see the PS3 works well. To be honest I thought it would just like my X Box did. I got an answer from Sony and they have "escalated" my case...so we'll see where that gets me. I asked the same question of Sony regarding getting a refund on the S370 as it won't do what it says on the tin, but I think this will become part of the escalated case. I think it'll be a pretty fine line as not every machine will have these problems. Mine works great but will not support all file types (althought the spec.says it should). As the PS3 has been around for a little while, you would have thought they could have successfully incorporated the software/firmware into each subsequent Blu Ray player. Not exactly rocket science is it. One problem I have is that the S370 was part of a promo and I actually got it free. How do you get a refund on a free gift?? lol. Hope it doesn't come to that. In the mean time...enjoy your PS3. I'm streaming thru my Lacie Lacinema in the other room for my PC content...and it works with everything!!

Hi

Well that's good they're escalating it. I'm actually getting rather annoyed with Sony now - keep getting the same fob off about file types etc (see what I consider a rather stroppy reply below).

I certainly won't be looking for a refund - I love the player, it's way better than the BDPS 550 it replaces and I love the YouTube, iPlayer stuff...

Tried out a few games on the PS3 - blimey - it was shooting at asteroids in my day - it's all way to complex now and I actually got really bored of it. Was playing 'Heavy Rain'... good grief, I spent 10 minutes trying to give a bloke in his pants a shave before it would do anything else - so gave up.

Latest from Sony:

Thank you for your reply.

I can confirm that the BDP is
compatible to display (JPEG ext "jpg"). On my initial response I stated
the following:

"It is possible that your server is not
broadcasting your videos to a compatible format. It may be that your
server is transferring the files to a different format that is not
supported by your BDP unit.

Please make sure that your server
broadcasting settings are matching your BDP compatible format. Please
contact your server provider for information on how to this."

Please
confirm if you have attempted the above troubleshooting, for me to be
able to assist you further with your enquiry.

When I have
received this information, I will be happy to
see what further assistance I can offer.

Hi...I guess the escalation is a positive move forward, but I'm pretty sure that I've covered everything I can from my end and nothing short of a firmware update or similar will cure the problems that we're all suffering from. I guess Sony are doing the best they can but I too am getting increasingly frustrated and seem to be going around in circles....and those "stock" answers are a complete waste of time....grrrr.

Still no reply to my escalated complaint so far. Saw your post to the Sony guy on another thread regarding the sound drop out problem Pity he hasn't replied to you or me regarding this streaming issue. I've only played one Blu ray and one DVD and haven't experienced any sound drop out yet. (connected via HDMI to EX503). Wonder how many firmwares they have in the pipeline?

Hi Roger, Thought you might like to see the escalated reply from Sony. Doesn't look like they will admit that the player is at fault rather it's the media server or the user or the PC or whatever, not their player of course. I've sent another reply with a few questions, mainly....is there a firmware update in the pipeline. As they don't think there is anything wrong with their player...I'm not too hopeful of an update anytime soon. Cheeky suggesting I spend ages trawling a load of other forums in the hope that might be able to help everyone here on WHF when surely they sure be able to help us all out easily.

Assuming this is moderated, perhaps someone from the magazine could address this issue directly to Sony, when they next pop in to the office.

Thank you for your enquiry.

in relation to your email, the TV will not natively see the files you have on your computer, the 2 servers you have advised, Media Player 11 and Twonky from my knowledge do not broadcast the original format, they will have to transcode the files, normally in an MPEG format, i can only recommend you check the extensive Twonky forums for tweaking the program for use with Sony products, this unfortunately we do not support the packages.

This is also related to video stutter, the file in being broadcast this way and has nothing to do with the receiver, the player and the TV use packets of data as they are received are shown almost instantly, the TV or the player are not responsible for the quality or smoothness of the image, again you would need to play with the server settings to get this right, there are lots of restrictions in both of the advised servers, firstly Windows Media Player 11 will only broadcast files it supports and all are sent in MPEG2_PS_ Standard Def, depending which version of Twonky is being used, again numerous restrictions and broadcast options are available.

As this issue is not down to the Sony products I cannot guarantee your retailer would offer a refund, however if you could send me a sample of video you are having issues with I can test on a server I have here, although not one you are using i can check that the files are ok.

I hope this information is of assistance, and i hope your search of the forums will help you find the answers so you can advise the other reporting issues on your forum.

Hi, Just had a great phone call from Sony tech. explaining in a lot more detail why we are having problems. So many of the Media servers use trans coding which can cause problems with play back depending on the file format at source. The Sony is designed primarily to work with the Media Server that comes installed on Sony Vaios and PC's. They are trying to get this software available for non-Sony PC's but so far with no success. He suggested Wild Media server (15 day free trial available, chargeable thereafter) which has specific settings for different equipment manufacturers, also to try Twonky Media server and looking on their forums about the best settings to match the Sony kit and known issues etc. Unfortunately, there will not be one magical firmware to fix the various issues as there are too many variations, users, software, file types etc. If you have Windows 7, Windows Media Player 12 is a lot more user friendly for many DLNA clients and streamers, and should perform much more capably than Media Player 11. I'm going to try some of these options this weekend and will keep you informed if I have any success. Failing that...I'm selling the player next week.

Installed the trial version of Wild Media, set up the devices for the S370, tweaked a couple of settings and what do you know....everything bloody well works!!!! It saw all the files and played back everything with no probs. I think it transcodes on the fly, as the file type is now seen as MPEG2. I then connected the router to my new EX503 and everything worked thru that as well. The only downside of Wild Media is that it costs 40 dollars. I tried another server called Mezzmo, it also has a 15 day free trial. It took a little longer to play the files than Wild Media server, but the playback quality was exactly the same, played all different file types, again transcoding on the fly to MPEG2. Ideally, I would like to find some free software to do this job, but don't think i'm going to be able to. I think I'll probably go for the Wild Media. It's still cheaper than buying a WD HD TV Live I guess. It would be great if Sony couild eventually bundle this player with their own software so it works out of the box, but at least we know that it can work very well as a media player. Good luck with your set up. Ian

I have a canadian purchased 370 -here is what i have working through network. Win 7 (64) - main PC with shared folder for media on a dedicated drive. I believe Windows media player 12 seems to be what decides what goes through the shared folders and how it is encoded as i has MASSIVE issues with xbox360 getting up and running and had to mess about with settings in WMP12 - i do not have any additional server/software running. I thought it useful to share this tip on this thread as I have been looking for a way to get my extensive dvd collection playing through the 370 via ethernet. I rip to 1 large uncompressed VOB file using DVD shrink, save it in the shared media folder, then simply rename the file extension to avi. The 370 can then see the file and plays it fine retaining audio files and subtitles as you select them in DVD Shrink. The quality to my eye looks pretty good and i cannot tell difference from the DVD disc. You lose out on chapter selection and fast forward/rewind is a little hit and miss but on the whole I'm relatively happy with it for now. I also had a bunch of MKV files that i renamed to avi and some worked - some did not. I'm on firmware MO3R623 - hope the dvd tip helps.

Hi Ian

Have been away on hols for the last couple of weeks - the trial versions of Twonky etc will now have expired which is a shame.

I'll try WildMedia but I use a Mac so don't think it'll be as good...

I have a Sony BDP-S370 and a Western Digital Nas (which has Twonky). The blu-ray and NAS are both wired into the router

My problem is that the Sony doesn't keep up with what files I'm holding on the NAS. For example, I'll delete some music or video files on the NAS (via my PC) but the Sony interface still shows them as being on the NAS (but unable to play them). Sometimes restarting the NAS/Twonky service works, other times it doesn't.

I'm not sure where the problem lies, but it's really frustrating.

Anyone experienced the same thing or can offer a solution?

I wish Sony would just admit that the advertised DNLA feature on the 370 is a joke and fix it...

Anyone have any joy with this?

I dont want to pay for a streamer as I have a PS3 but sony says you can stream on the 370, but I have yet to figure it out.

Also the PS3 does not support MKV which is dumb considering another sony product does.

Thanks

I've given up. Life's too short... Sony support worse than useless, not even acknowledging the problem when a quick Google brings loads of gripes from people who can't get it to work.

But having just written that I've just noticed there's a new firmware upgrade sohave just installed it. However, I've temporarily disabled my iMac so can't test it...

I am a PC.

It works great, but sony says nothing about having to pay for using the DLNA, as looking through the tinternet and it seems this is the only one that really works.

I wonder after the 15 days is up, can I just uninstall it and then get another 15 day free trial or will it remember my IP address?

Hi Matt

I was quite excited to read this so have installed Serviio on my Mac - but same old blummin' problem. The BD player can view the folder structure but each time I get 'there is no playable file'.

I've enabled transcoding and told it where my audio, video and photo files live.

Any ideas? I've set the renderer profile to 'Sony BD player' as automatic discover did not work...

Be great if you can give me some pointers!

I might be getting somewhere with Serviio. I think, unlike the others, it scans all your media into another location. The web site states this can take a while.

Looking at the tmp folder I see it's constantly getting updated and Serviio is using a lot of CPU so I guess I need to let this run its course?
