hi folks , im torn between these two tvs , i like the bright picture of lcds , but want to also be able to see detail in dark scenes when watching blueray and upscaled dvds , when watching standard def im not too bothered , i understand that plasma has always had the advantage when displaying dark scenes , and lcd for bright ones , the samsung seems to tick both boxes with its led backlighting apparently giving near plasma levels of deep blacks , 2000000 to 1 ratio and all that , but im concerned that this is reached when displaying a dark screen (ie , tv turned on but no signal ) , which of course is misleading , my basic question is , does this samsung do detailed dark scenes as well as the panny ??? if it does, its for me ... if not , ill go for the panny as its the best plasma in my price range as far as i can see , i expect both the respective new models will be more expensive and i dont want to wait too long ( 6 months already aaarrrrrggggghhhh ) any help would be great .. thanks.....

Hi Maxflinn

Which one did you find better yourself, try and go back with some DVDs/Blu-ray and have a play with both, you dont say where you have seen these models, but if its a dealer they should be more than helpfull, but then if its comet/currys they should be to.

For me the panasonics does have a better picture, BUT i dont like the cosmetics of them, the samsungs do look the part especailly the rose black/ocean blue, but as i said go back and try different material, and if you like what you see go for that model, i think either way you wont be disapointed.

good advice , but my thinking is that the sets in the stores probably wouldnt be properly calibrated , i have seen a friends samsung le40a656 many times using various settings and the detail isnt great while watching dark scenes , but having read many reviews of that set ( properly calibrated using thx optimisor ) on various sites , the general opinion is that the black levels are very good , given the usual lcd ( without led backlighting ) limitations ..hopefully my friend will get around to proper set up soon , and i can see for myself the difference , as claimed , also , most stores have many feeds going to the same tvs , and picture quality suffers , and , most suggested settings for good black levels on sites such as this for lcd tvs normally reccomend setting the backlight to minimum , then you lose the brightness i like , i guess im hoping the samsung 786 can do bright and blacks at the same time when set up right , it did look very good in the shops i have to say , and most reviews are great , by the way the panny im looking at is the 50pz80b , which looked great too , the samsung sure is a looker , but im after function primarily , the panny is a couple of hundred euros cheaper ,, mmmm , i dont know , but i guess its a nice problem to have , once i get the dough ( damm them bankers ) .......
