I've recently purchased a Philips 9664 TV and configured 'Personal' picture settings as suggested by the What Hi-Fi team and others on these forums.

I'm wondering if other owners use these settings in all situations. Alternatively, do you tweak them dependent on type of action you are watching (SD/HD TV, film, sports, etc) or do you use other default settings for various inputs (e.g. 'Cinema' for blu-ray, etc).

The rest of my system consists of Sony 760 blu-ray, Denon 2310 amp and B&W MT-30 speakers.

Any suggestions for optimising the viewing experience gratefully received.

Cheers

Hi louie i have the 47" which has all the same settings. I find the main difference in setting is weather PERFECT NATURAL MOTION is on or off. When switched on it gives a 3d affect so i only use while watching hd documentarys, hd wildlife and kids animation. vivid, standard, energy saving ,all have PERFECT NATURAL MOTION switched ON. For movies i selected vivid then switch off most of advanced settings in the home settings, because for me cinema mode on most tv is way to dull. It can be a pain since theres only 1 personal setting . I prefer game mode for football or sport as this leaves least lag on fast panning .BUT what would i know im only a window licker.

Thanks for the reply grifz. I know that ultimately it's down to personal preference, but's it's always interesting to see how others are configuring the numerous settings.

So what's wrong with window lickers then?

Hi LittleLouie,

I am currently using a 42PFL7404. Only £800 and dare i say once run in , bloomin bargain. Not the same set i know but this is how i got this Phillips set to work the best.

Using SKY HD set the picture with all HDNM options turned off - No Contrast boost, Sarpness etc.

Set the picture up for a HD source. Even on my cheaper set i got it with no bleed, bad edges or low saturation or anything else for that matter.I used the THX disc to get in the right ball park, swapped HDMI and then set from there. Note 1 bar can be quite a big jump for the settings.

Then try the HDNM. I have found -minimum for HDMN + 100hz to be the best with all others turned off. I got the best picture from SD with little effect on HD by turning the backlight off before calibrating. Test all other processing options from here. I have them all turned off.

Used a DVE disc to set up Blu-Ray- first thing is that sharpness was way,way too high even on 1. Currently using a Panny DMP-BD80- for Blu-Ray with player set to 'Soft' - (which should read 'sharp anyway but very, very clean). So very clean picture, clean DVD replay, then added 'Advanced Sharpness' to boost picture detail without the blurry edges of the standard sharpness setting.

' Transformers 2 - 'picture is so deep and sharp now that i have had to move the set further from the wall to fit all the desert in!!!'

Like many Phillips my set was a pain to set up and get right but i absolutely love it. There are so many options that you can try out based on different sources/ image quailty etc. once the basics are in place.

Means we get to keep playing with the buttons!! No fun in never touching it againis there! -eh AV nuts!!
