Optical V Coaxial

When a choice is available, is it generally better to go for Coaxial or Optical digital connections?

... or is there any noticeable difference?

Theoretically, coaxial should be better than optical as there is no conversion going on, but personally doubt you'd hear the difference.

Though,if you have both,you could alway's compare them for youself...

Although optical does have the advantage of no direct electrical connection between the two units, which can have a bearing on ground loop/hum problems, and noise on the digital signal.
