Personally if I see a live DJ and they aren't using a pair of record players and a crossfader then I lose all respect for them as a DJ. Don't people realise that they're there to visually entertain as well as play music?

Yup. One of my local Bars has a DJ on Friday nights which uses just what you described.

I swear he uses only the laptop and hardly any other equipment.

Basically his arms/hands hardly move at all.

I'm kind of wondering if all is already mixed on his pc!

There's plenty of software out there that'll do anything you need it to, mixing included. Anyone, and I mean anyone can be a DJ these days.

I've mixed using normal consumer CDPs with no pitch control and slower than paint drying on a humid day. But you do with what you can in some places.

If I get a Technics 1210 I'll probably just start off with a cheap cartridge and phono amp then consider upgrading them later once I've decided if I want to keep a record player.

I've been advised that a Shure M44-7 cartridge and a Behringer PP400 phono amp would be a good place to get started.

Perhaps go for a more neutral cart.

They will already be mixed on the laptop. I know a DJ who has all of his playlists pre mixed on his laptop, the mixing is done by software. DJ'ing is not what it used to be by any stretch of the word.

Just checked the Bay for 1210's ... some have crazy prices :)

I'd also stay away from anything that has DJ rubber slip mats.

There are a couple on Gumtree which may be worth checking out, depending on where you live.

My advise would be not to have it couriered but collect and inspect.

Video leaked from the old Matsushita Technics testing facilities. It is evident that speed tracking has not been done professionally and with precision like Crosley.

Here's one 1210 in great condition.

Why not go fo the Ortofon Super OM 10 Cartridge? You can change and up the stylus later to higher OM. BBB is this good idea?

You can, but Ortofon no longer make either the cartridge or stylus (as far as I know), so my recommendation would be to buy the Super OM 20 cartridge/stylus combination, because as I said before, it's the sweetspot of the range. The Super 30 is supposed to be more clinical, less musical, and the Super 40 is really highly rated, but probably overkill for the turntable Steve will probably buy (if he ever does *wink*).

I'm still undecided TBH but I've got a PPI claim coming in Jan/Feb so once I find out how much it'll be for I'll probably pull the trigger on a Techie.

I'd wait and see how much you get, then come back. Personally, I wouldn't go near an ex-DJ turntable, but it's your decision in the end.

If I do get a Techie I'll make sure it's mint condition and gets professionally serviced.

It's far more interesting than a CD jewel case or the low resolution image you get with a digital download.

As a collectible, yes I agree the vinyl looks and feels nicer, but it's at least £40 more expensive than CD !

PS you can easily find > 2400x2400px cover art downloads.

What's the best way to keep vinyl and the stylus clean?

I use a stylus brush, but be very careful when you use it. There are other ways of cleaning the stylus.

As for the records, you can get a Knosti anti stat record cleaner, but as your records are new, I would just use a good quality anti static brush.

Maybe start a new thread, or look through, as they have been discussed recently.
