Whittled things down to a shortlist of 4 Pioneers, SCLX72. SCLX81, SCLX82 or maybe the new SCLX53 ( just for the 3D capabilites for the future).....They range in price from about £850 up to £1200 and I can't really get in to demo any of them against each other. The cheapest is the '72 which I'm pretty keen on due to the price but I'm not sure if there's a big difference between the '72 and the '81/2?? It'll be used for Sky HD and Blu Ray exclusively. Any advice would be appreciated!

Hi

Well i see you have monitor audio speakers there, someone told me they thought a pioneer on monitor audio sounded abit to bright for them today, so with that in mind i would go for the 81/82 amps. These two amps are THX ultra 2 plus and have been made to an extremely high standard. They are also more musical and have a greater grip on the sound.

Well here is the what hi fi review on the 82:

http://whathifi.com/Review/Pioneer-SC-LX82/

But i personally if the 81 is much cheaper for you go with the 81, otherwise it would make more sense with 82.

I would see what sort of deals you could get on them, by the way most shops will take a little less if you phone up, perhaps see how you can do deal wise.

Both are fantastic

grdunn123:Is the 82 just a slightly 'tweaked' version of the 81 or is it worth spending an extra £250 to get it?

Well the 82 is said to have even more detail and better sound. But i have seen mixed comments on how much better it is.

If it was me personally i not sure i would want to part with £250 more because of how good the 81 is.

The main difference between 71/72 and 81/82 is an extra 10w output power per channel for the 81/82 and THX Ultra 2 instead of THX Select 2.

The difference between the THX Ultra 2 and THX Select 2 as quoted from THX is

" THX Ultra2 Certified products bring the cinematic experience to larger
home theaters, 3,000 cubic feet in size, with a viewing distance of 12 feet or greater from the screen."

and

"THX Select2 Certified products are for medium sized rooms, up to 2,000
cubic feet in size, with a 10-12 foot viewing distance from the screen."

Therefore the 81/82 would only have greater benefits if the room and viewing distance is greater.

I went for a 71 based on the room size rather than the difference in performance. There is a lot of subjective opinion as to how significant the difference between 71/72 and 81/82 is , some say there is a big difference some say there isn't , to some it's worth it to some it's not. The 81/82 is the better amp on spec but the 71/72 is still a pioneer and has still been air studios tuned so unless you have a big room a 71/72 should be more than sufficient. I have asked a dealer about the difference between 71/81 and 72/82 and basically was informed performance wise hardly noticeable. However the newer 73/83 range is being reported as having a significant difference to the 72/82 range therefore unless you are getting a 73/83 you may as well get a cut price 72. The 53 is not an SCLX it's a VSX it's hasn't got the Susano lineage so i wouldn't consider it a viable option against a cut price 72.

V1C thanks for explaining the differences. I have a reasonably small room, 4 x 4.5 m2 so would probably then look at the 72. Can't really demo the 72 or other models so can't do a like for like comparison. I'm upgrading from an Onkyo TS-XR806 receiver and I'm assuming the Pioneer models are a significant ugrade?

I think you would need to seek some dealer opinions as to what level pioneer needs to be to be a "significant" improvement on the Onkyo 806. I prefer pioneer always have (after my first yamaha amp) however i have a lot of respect for the other makes and wouldn't like to tell you yeah it's going to be much better, honest answer i don't know.

I'm running an LX90 with MA RS6/RSLCR and RSFX and it sounds superb. The MA's perform beautifully with the grip and dynamics of the ICEpower amps in Pioneers' LX amps. I'm waiting to upgrade to the GS range when they (hopefully soon) go GX. I'm pretty sure you wont be disappointed with the LX82

I have just set up this week:

Pioneer SC-LX72 and MA RX6 with RX1 rears, the sound and detail is amazing.

But the RX6 are a bit more laid back compared to the old RS series, and the pioneer amp is on the bright side. so a perfect match.

I can hear every little guitar string and every note with great accuracy.

I dont have one regret with this massive upgrade from my Diamond 9.1's

grdunn123:Is £799 inclusive of delivery a good price for the SC-LX72? If so then I think I'll go for one of these

I paid nearly £100.00 more not long ago, and I thought that was a good price. The LX72 is a very good amp, I too run this with some Monitor Audio speakers (Apex) and do not find this combo bright in the least.

Glad I bought it, made me want to revisit some old DVD's and CD's.
