Just landed a pristine condition SL-7. Quite chuffed about that.

Now just have to do a little magic with it.

I am not sure yet.

I think they are fairly hard to come by in good condition so I may keep it.

That plus it adds another spectrum to my others (Quartz regulated DD as opposed to Servo in the Sony).

Still like a Thorens TD150/160 and/or perhaps a TD125 to replace my mint 115 but I am happy with that one other than finding a good quality cart suitable.

I haven't bought the Micro Acoustic 2002e yet. Its between that one and an AT440 at the moment.

I love 'em all.

Is it the one I was watching on eBay that went for £113.99? I got mine a few months back for £58 including a Technics receiver. It was supposed to be working, but wasn't. Having got it for such a good price I wasn't that bothered and had it serviced by Vantage Audio. I'm very pleased with it. It sounds excellent through my Slee phono stage.

Can't keep a secret from you girls.

Yep, that's the one.

I thought it was reasonably priced but perhaps I paid to much ...

Never mind. Glad to hear yours sounds good and I will post pics once she's had her new coat etc.

That sounds lush.

Must look into it. - It will either be something on that line or a suspension platform, perhaps magnetic suspension feet.

I would assume that most things I do will perhaps add to the value one way or another.

I will probably source a new arm belt and replace it as a matter of cause as well as the usual dis-assemble, cleaning, lubing and de-oxing plus whatever else needs doing.

Fun times

Ooooh it is D. Cant be blowed with pics ,yeah yeah I know, But I knocked up some plinths for my mono blocks from black worktop offcuts and edged them with walnut , like a saddo to marry in with my rack that I had made.

Lookie at this for an example..

Funk Firm Little Super Deck.

How would you do this sort of stuff to an SL-7?

Sorry, I don't quite understand the question but I usually take everything apart as much as is necessary, depending on the condition of the innards.

For example, the Sony had a lot of (to much) old grease on the arm return/auto cogs so all was cleaned and re-greased where appropriate, same with the servo controlled drawer.

My Garrard was completely taken apart and serviced.

Same with the Thorens and the suspension was changed.

I replace belts and any other parts that need to and all electrical contacts are cleaned.

If any components need replacing I do that if it is within my and my equipments capabilities though this has only been necessary with amplifiers and speakers.

The above is the same with the SL7 but I know more when I get it.

Basically I'm just a little anal :)

Ah, gotcha.

I know some SL-10's have been plinted and the PSU moved to a separate unit.

I am not sure about this yet but the more I think about it, the more it appeals.

Think ... gloss black sprayed SL-7 with a nice laquer, perhaps some silver bits mixed in the paint, then housed in a lovely (american :) ) walnut plint. As a desert, fit some magnetic suspension feet ...

Must stop, this is better than porn.

Seriously though, I couldn't build a plint if my life depends on it. Luckily, I know a girl that can ...

regards

PS. I would be very interested in your opinion of your SL-7/sound and any advise on cartridges or anything else you could give. Many thanks

Many years ago I had an SL-5. I loved it's simplicity, but upgraded to the Manticore Mantra c/w the Acos Lustre GST1 tone arm that I had retrieved from my old Connosiuer (I can never spell that) BD1. Years later I gave the SL-5 away to my sister-in-law; I imagine she still has it. Move forward a century or so and I had the Mantra "inspired" and was then looking for a good phono stage. I ended up on the Graham Slee forum and I'm very glad I did. I bought the Slee Reflex M and 'met' a few people as one does in these places. It was morris-minor on the Slee forum who got me interested in the SL-7. He has one among his collection of three linear tracking TTs. When he suggested that the SL-7 would be a match for any modern £1000 TT I decided I would get one if I could at a reasonable price, which I did. The cartridge is the original P22 and I have no intention of replacing it; it really does sound very good. I tend to use the SL-7 for 45 rpm records so that I can avoid the hassle of shifting the belt on the Mantra. It is plugged into the phono stage of my Kandy, which is rubbish compared to the Slee. My plan is to get a second Slee phono stage, but it'll be a cheaper model than the Reflex.

As for cartridge advice/discussion you should 'meet' morris-minor aka Bob; he has his own website dedicated to p-mount cartridges.

Drummer,

I think you may be very restricted in what cartridge you can get nowadays, possibly only Ortofon do the right one and then only a MM.. Because of the straight line tracking and if it hasn't had a hard life, you may not need a replacement.

I was lucky enough to get one of the first SL10 to come to blighty and it was a fantastic deck. Everyone told me how rubbish it would be [Linn owners mostly] until they heard it. The speed stability, vinyl locking, quality MC cartridge and integrated head amp made a mockery of much more esoteric and expensive 'traditional' TTs. Plus of course in those days, Technics was ultra-reliable. I plugged mine in a year or two back after 15+ years idle, some of those years in the loft, and everything worked straight away.

Beautiful piece of kit if it's anything like the 10, enjoy.

See my post #2 above. Ortofon still do a T4P P-Mount high output MC cartridge. (Although it is £210.)

@ chebby

Nice looking cartridge!

@ifor

Thanks for the explanation and I will do that

@ AltruisticLemon

It was said to improve on the already good chassis and one of HifiWorlds reviewers uses one in a plint. It would also form a good base for suspension but like I said I'm not sure yet which way to go. It would mostly be a visual statement and adding something that makes the table unique but I do agree with you that they are probably design classics as are. Good thing is a plint will not require any drastic measures to the unit itself so the lineage and design is preserved.

@ relocated

Thanks, thats good to know and I'm sure I will enjoy it. I actually like all the TT I have but know that some will go in time. Just which ones?

regards

Chebby,

I have been trying to edit my post, having seen your info, but keep being denied access.

When I checked on cartridges a year or so back I could only find a MM Ortofon. Your googling skills must be better than mine. Useful info if I ever get a vinyl itch. Cheers.
