I GOT A V10 YESTERDAY, AND I DIDNT NOTICE ANY FLICKER ON DVD OR BLURAY IN THE SHOP OR ON FILM ON TV LAST NIGHT. I HAVE NOTICED IT ON SKY NEWS ON THE BLUE BACKGROUND WHERE THE SKY NEWS LOGO SITS. ITS FAIRLY NOTICABLE THERE, BUT SO FAR I HAVENT BEEN AWARE OF IT ON OTHER SCENES, SO HOPEFULLY ITS LIMITED TO THAT CHANNEL, AS EVERYTHING ELSE LOOKS FINE! HAVING SAID THAT, I WOULD BE VERY ANNOYED IF I SAW THAT FLICKER CONSTANTLY ON ALL CHANNELS.

It depends on what you are watching. News channels seem to be worse because it's a fairly static picture in the studio and the bright background seems to make the flicker more noticeable. It's not noticeable all the time and a lot of people don't even notice it, but once you've seen it then it can be distracting. Panasonic are aware of the problem as I phoned their technical dept. They said it doesn't affect all the models and that a firmware upgrade via a service centre would fix it. I'm surprised it's still an issue with this years models if they are aware of the problem.

NIBBO, WHEN YOU SAY A FIRMWARE UPDATE FROM A SERVICE CENTRE WOULD SOLVE THIS ISSUE, DOES THAT MEAN YOU HAVE TO SEND YOUR TV OFF OR IS IT A PIECE OF SOFTWARE YOU JUST INSTALL FROM A CD THEY GIVE YOU? I DONT THINK I NEED TO DO THIS YET, BECAUSE AS I SAY, I HAVEN'T NOTICED IT ON ANY OTHER CHANNEL YET, BUT IF IT WERE TO BE VISIBLE ON DVD OR BLURAY, THEN I WOULD CERTAINLY DO IT - SO I'M REASSURED THAT IT'S FIXABLE. THANKS FOR POSTING WHAT PANASONIC TOLD YOU.

I was just going through the v10 manual, and I've seen it has a setting called P-NR which reads:

"Picture Noise Reduction. Automatically reduces unwanted picture noise and flicker noise in the contoured parts of a picture (off/min/mid/max)." It's on page 30.

Not sure if you've tried this, hope it helps.

p.s. does your tv make any sounds, randomly and occasionaly, when it's not switched on?

My V10 as far as I can tell does not flicker.

Do you have the Intelligent Frame Creation on?
Apart from the fact the I don't like the video effect it sometimes makes, it uses a 600mhz sub field.
Could this be what you are seeing?

I have the Frame Creation turned off at all times.

As far as I know when the V10 is off its as quiet as a mouse.
I know the V10 has 4 fans so I suppose these could be active in some circumstances after its turned off?
This is not my first panny plasma but it does seem to feel very hot up front of the screen, hotter then I have noticed with other plasmas that ran somewhat hot.
Maybe the one sheet of glass front doesn't help?

Digigriffin,

My v10 doesn't flicker either as far as i can tell - i noticed it only on sky news.

My tv was making odd sounds randomly, even though it hadn't been used at all that day. I spoke to panasonic and they told me it was the tv updating itself (the epg). They told me how to switch the automatic update whilst in standby, off, which i did about 2 hours ago and so far, I haven't heard a thing.

It sounds like it could be something different but if it is the same then a Panasonic service centre needs to carry out the upgrade. It's not a software update that can be carried out over the air but a firmware upgrade which could stuff up your tv if it isn't done properly.

Have a look on google for brightness strobing on panasonic plasma and read the threads from a certain forum.

Spoke to Panasonic myself. there are no known issues with the V10 and flicker but he did say that it shouldn't happen so i've booked a service call.

Not surprised by Panasonic's tech dept's explanation - I've also found them to be unhelpful.

Surprised they didn't advise you to adjust your eyes' blink-rate - or something similarly spurious - to compensate for the flicker.

FWIW, I've never had flicker problems with my Pana plasma, whatever the source or programme/channel. (But it is c*cking well incompatible with my 24fps/1080p bdp. Grrrr!)

Hi StevieJ7

I own the 42" G10 -- so not the same model or screen size, I appreciate -- but I think you have the same picture options as me, plus the THX mode available on V range sets. What picture mode are you experiencing the flicker on? Are you having the same issue with all of the different picture modes? You may find that the problem disappears with time once the tv has bedded in.

I've had my TV for about nine weeks now; and I think the picture has improved noticeably since I initially set it up. I've only experienced a mild flicker a couple of times, but the overwhelming majority of programmes/DVDs/Blu Rays have looked excellent, so I think the very occasional flicker I have noticed can be attributed to poor source material.
