Ok folks, here's the deal.

I've just got my first hifi set up but I'd really like to get into some new music - most of my current stuff is rock/pop over the last 30 years or so. I'd like to start building up a collection of different genres so my idea is to ask all you good people who have been listening for much longer to recommend your top 2 or 3 albums/compilations/recordings or whatever, any genre, any era, which you think are the very best you have, all time favourites, you get the idea.

And then i'll start buying them and see where i end up.

Thanks in advance, start them recommendations rollin'

Hmm, tough one John, especially as it's me trying to broaden my music horizons, but here goes...

U2 - Achtung Baby

Paul Simon - Shining like a national Guitar

Sigur Ros - Takk

Not necessarily all time favourites (except U2, i would have picked more of theirs but that would be dull - I think their last three albums are incredible!) but just some I particularly enjoy. Oh, and add Foy Vance on there two - Indiscriminate Act of Kindness is one of the best i think.

Now your turn John...

Maybe try one or two sampler discs from linn records and naim records? I think you can listen to track previews in their download sections.

Julie Feeney - Pages (vocals, some strings, no guitar, drums, etc. A very well done album and her voice is wonderful. Standout tracks, "Grace" and "Impossibly Beautiful" although the whole album is very fine.

Madness - The Liberty of Norton Folgate. Any band would be proud of this, but the songwriting, craft and wit therein bear the Nutty Boys stamp. Very mature, don't expect a House of Fun in there, but there's the closest thing to a concept track that Madness will ever do in the title track. Standout tracks "Clerkenwell Polka", "Dust Devil" and "The Liberty of Norton Folgate".

3 classics - you've probably got a couple already:

OK Computer - Radiohead (best album ever)

K - Kula Shaka (underrated, but brilliant)

The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses (the other best album ever)

Three others:

Dynasty - Stan Getz (lovely Stan with his sax and a French trio - Guitar, Hammond organ and drums - there's no bass player, but the guy on the organ really gets it moving down low)

De Vuelta y Vuelta - Jarabe de Palo (Spanish rock/pop with a twist)

Monkey Business - Black Eyed Peas (play it loud! No, louder than that!)

If could only take 6 albums to my desert island it would be these.

Just 3? ÿAaaarrgh!

#1 David Gilmour - Live in Gdansk (CD2 is incredible)

#2 Free - Fire and Water

....and a new entry for #3, bought recently, Moody Blues - Every Good Boy Deserves Favour

I could've added Frank Turner - Love Ire and Song plus Porcupine Tree - Deadwing if you wanted 5.

Hope you enjoy all your new purchases Dave !

For me this is where the likes of Spotify and Last FM really make sense. You get given a list of recommended albums and you can check them out without chancing your money.

Alternatively, you could just check out some specialist radio shows to see what genres do the business for you. I'd recommend Craig Charles funk and soul show on 6 music and Giles Peterson or Zane Lowe on Radio 1. There are plenty of shows out there for jazz, metal, classical, etc and most can be listened to when it suits you on the iplayer or similar.

Try them out and find some new stuff.

johnnyjazz:Also anything by Joe Pass or Jimmy Smith,s Organ Grinders Swing ( Renault Clio Ad ) really jazzy man.

The compilation album JS:B3 is a good place to start with Jimmy Smith, has Organ Grinder's Swing but also has the theme from the Carpetbaggers (or The Money Programme if you prefer) which has the dirtiest horn section I've ever heard in it.

If you like Hammond-based jazz/funk then I'd recommend Medeski, Martin and Wood, they're superb. They've also done a few acoustic albums with John Medeski on the piano rather than the Organ, have a listen to Note Bleu, which is a compilation of their time with Blue Note, covers (for me) their best albums and features their live cover of Hey Joe, which I think is stunning.
