I will be asking the question of a like for like change...

its got to be LED all the way now, I can't go through this again!

Id love a panasonic plasma, my head says NO!!!

I have been in your exact position and my head was screaming don't do it! I didn't get another plasma and have never regretted it, every time I read the latest thread to pop up on here with someone having issues with their Panasonic plasma I know I done the right thing. There are simply too many issues with them for me to ever go back, my life has been far quieter since I went to LED that's for sure and I've just been able to relax and enjoy my TV.

Just popped out to look at the F7000 and F8000

why oh why have Samsung insisted on that ugly lump on the F7000 where the stand attaches?!

ours would be wall mounted, it just looks odd!

i can see that the F8000 handles blacks better, but I'm not sure I could justify the extra cost.

the guy in the shop suggested a Panasonic LED was the best way forward, he says they are better built, and have a significantly better refresh rate

im really confused now

also saw the Sony W905 in 2 shops, what's with the purple haze when not viewing front directly in front of it??

This is a Panasonic LED:

http://www.whathifi.com/review/panasonic-tx-l47dt65b

It gets 5 stars but says the Samsung produces better blacks.

Check this deal out on the Sony:

http://www.rgbdirect.co.uk/Products/Television/3D-LED-TV/SONY/KDL55W905ABU

Get 4 pairs of glasses and a free Blu-ray player, just price match with John Lewis.

I'd have to say that Sony TV's just don't do it for me...

Just had a look online at the Panasonic TX-L55DT65, it's circa £1500 depending on where you buy it, and also if you want the free iPad 2 which is offered by independents (not JL, Richer Sounds or Currys)

Not much to choose between really when comparing it to the F7000, which I am still strangely drawn to, despite the knobbly thing hanging off the bottom of it!

The only other fly in the ointment is that my Sounbar is black, and looks neat with the GT50...

These new TV's all seem to be silver, and I'm wondering what the soundbar will look like hanging off a silver TV

:wall:

I think my head is going to explode.. :help:

My system is all black and silver, but the main bits are all black and the stands are all silver.

I was under the impression that "lump" was just part of the stand and is removable for wall mounting, when I looked at the F7000 at the back it seemed like it came off for wall mounting although when I saw the two side by side I never thought about it further as it was obvious the F8000 had superior picture quality. Did you ask if that lump was removable?

In my opinion the F8000 justifies the extra cash as picture quality in all areas is greatly improved over the 7000, contrast is higher, blacks far deeper along with better black detail, colours are more natural and motion smoother. Only you can say if that's enough for you to justify the extra outlay though.

Panasonic LEDs at this end of the market are definately NOT the way forward, when I auditioned them all of them were inferior to the Samsung and Sony ranges of LED TVs, at the lower budget end Panasonic have a few really good sets but not at the price point you are looking at. A salesman will try to sell you whatever TV the store in question is pushing at the time, for example when I went into Currys at the time I was looking to buy my 55F8000 the salesman said that Samsung TVs were rubbish and I should buy the Sony W9...they were pushing the Sony really strongly for whatever reason so don't get confused by pushy salesmen.

As for the purple haze on the Sony W9 that is the now infamous contrast issue and is the reason I never bought one because unless you are sitting dead centre to the screen you will see completely different levels of contrast, two people on either end of a sofa will see different contrast levels for example. Unless your seating position is dead centre to the screen and don't have any friends or family that will be watching it then I would give it a miss, you only have to be a matter of inches off from the centre of the screen for contrast to be destroyed and wash out. It's a shame because it's a great set apart from that glaring issue.

Stick with an F7000 or 8000 and you won't be disappointed or go for another plasma if you can talk yourself into it, have a look at the Samsung F8500 for example although that is only available in 51 and 64 inch varients or go down the Panasonic plasma route again. If it was me I would buy the F8000 without question.

Thanks guys

@oldboy the 'lump' with the illumiated Samsung Logo is stuck to the TV! When the TV is on the stand it looks like it's part of the stand.

Everyone I've asked in shops about it has said they have asked the rep what Samsung thought they were doing. It's clearly lost on everyone but them!

Might just go for broke and go down the F8000 route

The manager from JL is calling me this afternoon to discuss where we go from here. I guess that conversation has to cover the 'like for like' TV issue, and what they might be prepared to sell me an F8000 for. (I'm waiting for JL's NKU to come back on a potential price match on an 55F8000 which is sub £1000!!)

I looked at the W905 as somewhere on here there was a suggestion it had plasma levels of PQ and very little lag. The 'purple haze' was enough for me to run a mile!

That's madness as that lump looked like part of the stand when I looked at the F7000 and is a poor decision by Samsung, I can see why it put you off...that would look silly when wall monted as it's a large lump from what I remember as it's the support bar for the stand. Ridiculous.

I'm trying to not push the F8000 to heavily so in the quest for fairness have you looked at the Phillips 55PFL8008? It also got a great review in WHF although a mixed reception elsewhere due to vast differences in the quality of panels reviewed as clouding seemed to be a major issue with some that were reviewed so it will be worth seeking out. I had a real issue trying to find somewhere that actually stocked it and it seemed restricted to Euronics centres when looking online and I never found anywhere that had one in my area.

Once I saw some of the review pictures of the level of backlight bleed it put me off anyway as it seemed like bit of a panel lottery at the review stage so entering into that in the hope that I got a good one was not something I was prepared to do but seek it out and judge for yourself.

As gel has pointed out Sony do have another range in the 8 series which I also looked at, these are not what they seem though, they are LG panels in a Sony casing with Sony processing. They are passive 3D screens and have seriously poor black levels as they vear more into grey territory like LCDs of old and weren't something I ever considered once I had seen one but they don't suffer from the contrast issue of the W9.

If it wasn't for the contrast washing out so drastically off axis on the W905 I would have probably bought one over the F8000 as head on it's really impressive but it's such a major issue I'm surprised it got past the design stage.

Hopefully you get that call this afternoon and can work out where you go from here with John Lewis and it's certainly worth asking about why they won't go down the like for like route although if plasma is not what you want now I would state I have lost confidence in it and want an LED equivalent model as like for like would be another Panasonic plasma of the same size and spec. As John Lewis don't sell the GT60 there may be some room for negotiation though as that would be the like for like replacement for this year.

Let us know the outcome MrW and I just hope the finishing line is in sight after this latest conversation

Sub £1000! Flipping heck! :O. I can't find it anywhere near that. :)

@gel I didn't think it possible either, but I have been communicating with the sellers via email, and they have confirmed the price and that they have stock...

If JL come to this party, then I probably can't reveal where it is, well, not on an open forum anyway!

My gut feeling is that the NKU price match will get thrown out!

Yep sub £1000 sounds too good to be true in all honesty, have you investigated the seller to make sure they are legit? A few emails to say the price is correct and that they have stock doesn't mean they are legit unless it's a big chain or known store, best to be safe than sorry and don't forget about the value of after sales service. It's just as important (if not more so) to have confidence in the retailer should you ever have a problem with the TV in the future so be careful.

I paid £1486 in total for my 55F8000 in the end from John Lewis and I can't beat that price today so I'm still a happy chappy, FYI you can share that price and the seller on here...there is an entire section on the forum dedicated to it called hot deals and gel is the king of that section, he has saved me loads of money over the years and has a talent for finding a bargain. Top man. He will be trying to find where you got that sub £1000 price from right now I bet ;)

I think they are probably a bunch of fly by nights, and no word back from JL NKU yet...!!

I've tried to find out more about them with little success. I wouldn't buy from them, never heard of them, but if JL price match, thats another story!

Wow, £1486, wish I could achieve that, I'd be signing up right now!I think you mentioned it was price matched with totaldigital, and £200 cashback? (if only Samsung would do that now instead of this buy something else deal...)

JL's manager calling after 4pm, so we are getting closer to some sort of resolution

Just off to empty the childrens piggy banks to edge closer to that F8000!

It's certainly worth investigating them to make sure it's a genuine retailer but as you say, if John Lewis do match the price don't hesitate! It did take them about 3 or 4 working days to get back to me via their online price match but less than 48 hrs via the in store request. How long has it been since you submitted the request?

Yep £1486 was a hell of a bargain for that particular TV and even more so 3 months ago when I bought it, a saving of nearly £1000 over the ticket price felt like a real bargain at the time I must say and gel was responsible for finding that price for me so trust him when he says he has found the cheapest prices. Yep at the time Samsung wasn't doing any stupid offers like get money off another item so I was fortunate to get the cashback deal but at this time of year retailers and manufacturers are more inclined to offer something free or money off another item simply because of the Christmas present factor.

I would be inclined to say I've never heard of Santa this year as well as empty the kids piggy banks in order to get the TV

They confirmed a price match last week within 24 hours for me (F7000 with totaldigital @ £1505.00 (its subsequently gone up at totaldigital)) and the online form does say 24 hours

No word from them yet, but I'll mention it when the manager calls me

To be honest the more I look at it the more fishy it looks!

I've found the F8000 online at £1616, so it's edging down slightly!

Father Christmas? Who's he??!!

Do they have a physical shop? JL won't price match otherwise...

That last price match was quick!

It did take a few days for me but then I guess it's down to how many requests they have at the time. The delay may also be down to the amount of research they are having to do into the retailer, if there is something a little fishy about it then they will be trying to find out more about the retailer I presume in order to make sure the request can be honoured or not. Certainly worth mentioning to the manager though.

£1616 is still a good price in all honesty and you will be hard pressed to find a better retailer and when you consider the extra 5 year warranty JL throw in it's a great deal at that price, again mention it to the manager and see how receptive he is at that price.

I don't know who Father Christmas is or indeed what this so called Christmas period is either...or at least this is what I tell everyone in order to keep funding my AV habbit

Difficult to tell to be honest... They have an address which I've tried to look up and although it's real I'm still not sure

There is something all together fishy about it

Once JL have phoned me I'll post details of it, then everyone can have a look!

My dad once said some things are too good to be true, this is almost certainly one of those instances!

If this is the price match at £1616, it is highly unlikely you will get it:

http://www.electronicempire.co.uk/televisions/3d-tvs/samsung-ue55f8000-55-smart-3d-led-full-hd

This is Total Digital's clearance website, which John Lewis don't do. You have to find the deal on Total Digital website.
