Got a terrible hang over

Am hungover and my hifi sounds harsh, bright and painful. I dont use MA or QED cables. Tried Nurofen and although it made the high frequencies more bearable I still can't increase volume beyond 8 o'clock. I then tried putting my Sennheisers on without plugging them in. Much better but it sounds slightly muffled. Your help is appreciated.
This is a top hangover tip, and I shall go and try it now as am in the same boat. By the way, tried the SA1s yesterday - and you'll notice there's been no "Oh dear oh dear oh dear" post.
Blimey, does this mean that the man that lives for imaging doesn't like the SA1s?

Could also mean he was speachless and bought 'em on the spot ...

Spendor got back to me over the amp compat. chart. They can't release it as it's confidential. Presumably there's some business ethics involved here re naming other manufacturers, etc...dunno. Anyway, Cyrus 8vs2 with PSX works very well but the Pre vs2 and XPower make them sing...looking forward to trying them then! Bet it's bloody good...

Well I had about an hour and a half with them, and there was no doubt that the imaging was great, but I was expecting voices to 'float' in the room and be sparklingly clean but 1) they were a bit recessed and 2) sibilance was awful. I had my amp but not the CD player and moving from the new Arcam FMJ (rubbish) to a Roksan Caspian helped a bit, and maybe the warmup over that hour and a half improved things, but Kate Bush still sounded like she was singing with a paper bag over her head (which is just not on).

So I'm a bit stuck. The bloke was saying "well maybe that's just how the recording sounds" but I can't believe that. Sounds ok on mine (still coloured but not so spitty). I'm going to go along again with some more material and a longer warmup but maybe what I'm looking for just doesn't exist. Or maybe I need to spend even more.........

... well ...

Mr Duncan, I can't remember what speakers you are using at the mo and what you'd like to improve about them?

I'm surprised that you found sibilance. I've certainly only ever heard it on terrible recordings and I have wooden floors and lots of windows! With respect to the mids and vocals, I think the balance does sound a little recessed and thick compared to say, Proac Tablettes, but for me it makes a more natural and tolerable experience. This may be part of the way Spendor have made them sound like bigger boxes.

Spendor suggested the Cyrus amps to me and I'm wondering whether these SA1s wouldn't suit warm amps. I guess they've come up with some speakers that have a carefully considered balance that won't suit everyone. It was pretty much exactly what I was looking for although a little more extension (and perhaps slightly bigger boxes?) would have been perfect.

Have you ever tried the Proac 1SCs? These certainly have a brighter balance but with superb imaging and may suit more. In fact, Proac have just released the Response D2 for £1,750. They're bigger but I imagine they're bloody good on the end of the right kit.

IMO, if you don't favour the SA1s after 90mins of initial listening, they're probably not for you. Good luck and keep us posted!

My solution for this is to fall asleep whilst listening. After about 60mins the balance and tone is perfect.....or is that just the CD ending....

They're just normal plastic cone colorations and I have to say I did'nt have problems with sibilance or unduly recessed mids and that was both on fm and cd.

I know I sound like a broken record but try Rega's and ProAcs Studios if you have'nt done so. Both have a more neutral balance.
the new Arcam FMJ (rubbish)
You knew this question was coming - what don't you like about it? I know it has it's ups and downs, but on the hole as long as it's getting a good thrashing it sounds superb. It makes music VERY clear, but that's where it's fault lies, it doesn't really give music much enthusiasm...still good when at -15db though!

Sorry young hughes, I can't answer for JD but I am intrigued. Without giving my opinion on Arcams FMJ do you like the amp or is it something that you in future put down as a 'should'nt really have bought that'? You blow hot and cold on that (amplifier).

Well I...er I...no. I shouldn't have really bought it! I wanted a Kandy but thought I would throw more money at it and bought the A32 for £800. It's good, but not £800 good let alone the RRP of £1200! I've always been tempted by Naim, but I'm not sure on the "dryness" of them - then again, for anyone looking for a reliable, superb performing amplifier for under £500 should look at the JVC A-X5 let alone it costing £80 on ebay! Especially good for dance, rock and similar as it just pumps the music like nothing else at the price and it's SOOOO powerful for a 70watter...FAR more powerful than the A32.

Respect, can't be easy to admit (to yourself) an expensive mistake such as this. I did it myself with an audiolab once. Anyway, have you listened to a cyrus 8vs2? Fantastic amplifier with drive, detail and punch. I'd take that anytime over both the naim and arcam.

Yes I have! But only after buying my Arcam! I agree it is far better than the A32, and I know what you mean by drive and punch...oh it has it alright! Also produces a nice soundstage which has some depth which is great. The only little niggle I had was perhaps the treble was a teeny bit forward - but it never forces the detail out, it just provides it as it should. And my girlfriend likes the compact looks. And no, I don't take my gf to hi-fi shops...

- Then again my cousin has the original 1980s 50" Grundig CRT in his bedroom and he gets the girls...and he has some whopping JBL L100Ts with 15" woofers!
