Economic Subwoofer for a kitchen(!)

We recently had some KEF ceiling speakers (£80 each) fitted in our kitchen, and linked through to a Denon RCD-N7 network player (about £250). They sounded great originally, but we realised it wasn't practical to fill the entire ceiling cavity with bass, so had to pack rockwool around the speakers to absorb some of the sound. It's left the speakers in the kitchen still sounding great for vocals and light music, but we've obviously lost some of the lower end 'punch'. I'm hoping a subwoofer could restore some of that low end, connecting via the network players sub pre-out. The sub would be sitting on engineered wood and in a slight recess. Given the price of the other components, I would think up to £250 for a subwoofer ... but ideally I'd like to go for an economic solution that's good rather than necessarily best in class. Any recommendations would be gratefully received as I'm still 'new' to the whole hifi thing. Thanks!
